    Default Big Boys Toys

Okay, so I can't possibly be in the class of restorers around here, but occasionally I do a polish-up or rescale and tonight was one of those. I took the scales of my Wade & Butchers FBU that I had put on the John Creswick some time ago and glued the broken part, hand sanded the excess glue away in progression and put them in Neatsfoot oil for a good two days. Tonight I rescaled my George Brittain razor in those. For the Creswick I got a pair of horn scales from Olivia. The GB is looking better in these scales I think. It even closes centred, which was quite the achievement for me. The Creswick however is off-centre by a mile. Closer inspection of the "work" I did, reveals that when drilling the holes I was centered on one side but off-centre on the front scale. This causes the off-centre closing of the blade and this means I'll wind up re-doing this some-day in the future, but for now, I'm pleased and a bit proud and have two Sheffields looking better than they did before...

Good work on both jobs. Great looking straight razors.

    Nice old razors.
Don't be too hard on yourself, unless the pinning is a mile off it has very little to do with how the razors centre.
More likely the tang is warped or ground asymmetrically. The beauty of horn is that it can be heated & shaped to compensate for these instances.

No, I don't have that kind of money. I have my eye on the classifieds here on SRP, but that GB is even more. Can't afford it right now. If there would only be a way to pay in terms...
This GB was bought quite a while ago from a local barbershop here in Holland. At a fair price if I may add. I have one more that I more or less "saved" for posterity, but haven't found the time to really get it right yet. Funny thing is that I thought these were really, really rare and now suddenly they seem to pop up like all over the place. Two on the Flea bay right now. One is probably a re-grind as I don't think back in those days they'd know how to make a bellied hollow blade, but hey, as long as it shaves right it's okay.

I tend to shave in such a way that only the blade gets wet, not the scales. It takes practice for sure, but it pays off in the end.

They both look good and saving that broken scale was a nice bit of work too. If you unpin the Creswick in the future be sure and check for a bent tang. I have had to straighten a couple of tangs and they both have been on Sheffield blades.

Wet? I can safely assure you, those scales will never get wet. I don't know the OP either!

    I rest my case.
