Thanked: 1587I'm in no way an expert on this but I would guess that your best bet in Australia is either through a TAFE facility or some kind of College. Again, I don't know this for certain, but I'm almost sure anything like that will not cover honing or stropping because, due to health and safety laws, barbers cannot use straight razors. At best I think they use disposable blade straights.
But take all that with a pinch of skepticism, because I haven't been in a barber shop since I lost all my hair 20 years ago.
I don't want to put anyone on the spot, but IMO your best bet is to try to find someone close to you (geographically, I mean) who'd be willing to show you how to hone and strop. I'm just not sure those two skills would be covered in any course you could find.

Thanked: 1587Man, I just realised every answer I've given you since you joined this forum has been kinda "you can't do this, don't do that, I'm not sure you'll find..."
Sorry mate, I don't mean to dampen the spirits. You get stuck in and go at it, we'll be here cheering for you and helping when we can.

If you come to Perth I will hook you up with a 2nd generation barber who still uses straights and has a strop at every station. Does a great face shave and is always willing to help new people. Probably not much help but thought Id offer. That would be my recommendation for barbering skills. Find a barber willing to teach. A mentor could help you learn to shave but not many people shave others. Maybe hit up your mates for practice. Good luck. Ed

Its Frank Barbarich for hair in Trinity arcade in Perth. If you go in tell him Ed sent you. Think he charges 10- 20 but def not more than 20. If you see him use some paddles before hand you can thank me later. He ends up with all my prototypes to try out so he is getting a collection. He did barter with me for honing when I started, made up 2 jarrah paddles with crox .5 and alumina .3 for the boys in the shop. In the end I only ever paid for one blade to be sharpened. Im in quite regular and he does seem to be doing more shaves these days. Think I made him catch the bug again,
