It is a very interesting round for many of us that want a true all around hunting rifle for Nth American game, I would only feel a bit under gunned only if I were after the biggest bears..
The biggest things around here are moose, deer and black bear which a well place shot from a 308 at a reasonable distance will put paid to. For the bigger bears more snap is always a good idea I would think if they are on the menu. The 338 Fed seems likely to offer that in a short barreled handy rifle.

A buddy of mine bought a 338 Lapau Sako over 20 years ago and that has more than enough snap to drop moose farther than anyone has any business shooting at them. There quite a few sold here at that time. Love that round. What can you say about a round that a Brit sniper used to kill a couple of bodies at 1.5 miles.

I handled one of these .308s recently at my LGS. It was nice. It had a steep price tag, but It was very nice and seemed to handle well. The only thing I foresee is the mags being either very expensive or hard to obtain (think Ruger Mini-30). I think Savage has the Varmint or Hog series that is very similar minus the detachable mag. It comes in .308 and .338 I believe.

Anyone remember one of Cooper's original scouts in 308 built on a BRNO ZKK 601 short action with pop up rear site Google Image Result for http://images.guntrader.co.uk/GunImages/13/1306/13060/130604164106001/130604164106001-4.jpg . Loved those actions.

For me, I'm not a fan of forward mounted scopes, short barrels, or birdcage flash suppressors on bolt guns as I consider bolt guns as surgical equipment.

With your knowledge of guns, build one or have one built to your specs...you won't regret it one bit after it's all over.

Glen, I have one of those it is a very nice rifle for me. Here in Florida we only have moose that are made of foam and our deer aren't much to be spoken of. However, our boar...well our boar can get big. This will do good on the boar especially with a hollow. I would imagine the same with bear too, again our bears our small and I really don't even know if we're allowed to hunt them. I've never bothered to ask as I don't see them being worth the trouble.

The mags are the only down side in my opinion. I mean they used a M16 extractor and muzzle brake why couldnt they just keep it in the group and use AR-10 mags? I read in a magazine that the reason they didn't use AR mags is because they wanted their name to be synonymous with quality and that if their gun took AR mags then people might have problems with the gun and blame ruger when really it's the fault of the mag that somebody bought from a company that doesn't have a great reputation. So I guess they have a point but still If your not going to buy good quality mags who else will you have to blame but yourself.

If that Scout rifle uses a Ruger MkII action it has a claw extractor ala Mauser 98 not M16 extractor. It is hard to beat a mag built like an AK mag if you want bullet proof.

For those not wanting a flash eliminator/birdcage flash suppressor the Canadian/Australian market version apparently has an 18 inch barrel sans the objectionable appendage.

There is another kick butt version of a compact Rugger 77 30.06 cal SAR (Search and Rescue) Rifle . You might not want the blaze orange colour though.

Your right my bad I get confused sometimes. Your right about the mags though. I have never had a problem with mine and I tend to neglect my mags just to see what they can take. I am really just complaining because a mag that is supported by third party companies tends to be a less expensive mag (sometimes). I can't wait till other parties start making the mag for the gunsite if they haven't already. I haven't really been looking to much for them since I have been spending money on razor stuff over gun stuff. I personally dont mind the birdcage though. That SAR rifle is pretty sweet and as for the orange.. well thats what cerakote was made for haha

You had me wondering about the extractor for a bit as I have been out of shooting for 20 years or more and I liked it when Ruger went back to a Mauser 98 extractor and controlled round feed. Same goes for the new old Model 70 Winchester when it got redesigned back to M98 claw controlled round feed.

The SAR rifle helps keep the Search and Rescue Techs out of trouble so blaze orange is appropriate for that purpose. They are liable to have to parachute in in areas that may have Grizzly, Polar or Black bears not to mention Cougars/Mountain Lions, Wolves and so on in such a vast and varied country Canada is. If it is good enough for them it would be good enough for me but I don't think it was ever marketed to civilians.
