Cool Ruger's new Gunsite Scout Rifle

Just got a chance to check one of these out Sunday, created a serious itch

    Ruger® Gunsite Scout Rifle Models

Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle, 308, W/Detachable Magazine - Impact Guns

Does any one have one ??? or even links to more reviews ???

I found 3-5-10 rnd Mags so it can be legal for hunting in all states, really looks like a sweet handling package only in .308 Win so far but it could be re-chamberd into .338 Federal easy enough...

Might wait one year to see if they offer any new chambering from the factory first

There might be some useful information in this article under the Ballistics and Trials sections.

I do have to admit, I like that claw extractor.

Have never tried the .338 Federal, how does it compare to .338 Lapua?

Would make a nice moose rifle in the bush with a 3 or 5 round mag. I would have preferred a plain ported barrel to what appears to be a flash suppressor. Really liked the International Sporter manlicher stocked I had years ago in 308.

The .338 Federal is simply a necked up .308 win so nowhere near the reach or hitting power of the Lapua

the 185 Barnes is popping at about 2750 fps on the Federal the Lapua is closer to 3450 fps

    Honestly I am shopping a 50m - 300m rifle I have multiple long shooters

go with the 18 inch barrel if you are taking long shots... That 16 inch will lose some serious muzzle velocity as it sails... Need at least 18 for powder burn.

While there is not much wrong with the 308 Win round for 50 -300m shooting that 338 Fed is interesting in an 18 inch barrel. It just might not suffer as much mv loss as a 308 with a 180gr bullet when going down from a 22-24 inch barrel.

The 338 Fed round was not around when I was shooting regularly. The quoted mv for it, was that out of a regular length 22-24 inch barrel?

    IIRC it was a 22in

It is a very interesting round for many of us that want a true all around hunting rifle for Nth American game, I would only feel a bit under gunned only if I were after the biggest bears..
