Well gents the new year is here, and I don't know about you guys, but I am pretty excited about this season..

This is the last year of screwing around with getting the overall garden into shape..

We are planning on really working on the soil before planting this year, we are hoping that this will be the last year of tilling
Planting is going to be simply fun this season, the wife and I are seriously planning on a hodge-podge mystery planting of all the old seeds we have saved over the last 3 years...
We are thinking of her Pumpkins and my Tomatoes as the only things we are going to plan out..

This will be the second season on our garden since retirement , have lots of plans,, now to figure out why I didn't plant onions in the fall! Tc

We are going to do container gardening this spring. I bought my wife heirloom seeds from Monitcello for Christmas. The sampler packet has swiss chard, peas, cayenne pepper, and pear tomatoes plus some other things.
We have a compost bin out back that we've been using for a couple of years and a compost bucket in the kitchen that we've been filling with scraps. Most of my coffee grounds and tea leaves end up in the compost.

What kind of containers are you going to use Leatherstockings? I want to add some additional plants in containers. Tc

We bought a couple of kits from the orange box hardware store. The are basically wooden rectangles that sit on the ground, similar to this...

I've never done container gardening before-this is all new to me. Our yard, although large, is mostly shaded so we have limited garden space.

And a read that will without a doubt alienate my wife from the Garden

It doesn't matter how much sense it might make, I will lose her support with that idea ..

Composting in general is an idea we are still working through, but that is to be expected when dealing with a City Gal and moving her to the wilds of North Idaho..

We have the coffee grounds the eggshells, and the woodchips on the approved list so far,,, I sneak in the Chicken Poop when she is at work hehehe

The soil in these parts makes planting fruits or veggies a brown thumb special unless you add massive amounts of topsoil and fertilizer and the 100 degree plus summers will wilt anything. I've been dabbling in hydroponics a bit and that seems to be the best route. Peppers and Tomatoes seem to be the fare.

We just toss everything on the top of the snow, it layers out during the winter then melts and rains in during spring
