I found Defensive Handgun Fundamentals by Grant Cunningham at the local bookstore and it has been good to read as well. Very interesting, and practical approach. Had some techniques that were different than what I learned in basic skills classes.

Depended on your age and "mind set". You'll know what I mean as time goes on. A good "wheel gun" is excellent, versatile, and simple to "point shoot". A Good Ruger Redhawk or S&W 629 in .357 is a excellent starting point.
You can start out with .38 spl, move up to .38+P and eventually .357 mag. all within the same platform. Not too little or too much platform for everyone to utilize.
