I looked all the way through this thread and about the only martial arts mentioned involve the blade.
When talking about Historical European Martial Arts, Bartitsu should be close to the top.
At the very least, it should receive honorable mention!
Bartitsu became known as: The Martial Art of Gentlemen.
Bartitsu was developed by Edward William Barton-Wright in 1898 and was very popular until about 1902. It might have been forgotten entirely if Arthur Conan Doyle (The Adventure of the Empty House) did not have Sherlock Holmes mention his martial which was spelled "baritsu" (which my have been either a typo or an intentional misspelling.)
My favorite branch of Bartitsu is the walking stick style of Pierre Vigny (a Swiss instructor at the London Bartitsu Club.)
While it never quite petered out entirely, Bartitsu had its followers online since the 1990s, but it had a big revival that started in the around 2010 when books started to be published and it is still a popular, albeit obscure, martial art to this day.
Another European Martial Art that employs the "La Canne" method of Vigny is the French martial art Savate.Last edited by howdydave; 01-03-2020 at 01:28 AM.
