Thanked: 1160HEMA - Historical European Martial Arts ......Anybody in to it ?
I've been hesitant to bring this up as it is sort of something that probably needs to find a specific Home forum but, hey maybe there are some straight shaving guys out there who are into this ? In the last year I took an interest in this and I am still very very green. I have found my interest lies with the Saber and more specific the Cutlass. I have a waster(practice sword) on it's way that I had custom made in Spain and am excited to start drilling. My goal is to eventually start a local HEMA group in Denver with same like minded interest. There apparently is a group here that is focused on two handed Medieval sword but I admit I have not reached out. Work and other things make this slow starting for me and of course money is a huge factor as well. If your into it and in Denver especially, please share knowledge .So neat....Boarding Party sorta ready Cap'n aye !
Picture of my Waster soon to be.
One of my sword world heroes right now..

Thanked: 481I admit I've always been interested in learning European Martial Arts. I've also never taken the first step though. I've always imagined swinging a 2 handed sword about would be great exercise and stupid amounts of fun.

Thanked: 481I'm with you there %100. I've done the exercise bit a few times, but it seems I always end up falling off the wagon because I hate doing it even though I love the results. Or rediscovering vending machines and sugary treats, one of the 2. But I'm up over #270 again, so I might have to suck it up and start doing conventional exercise again before Doc tries to stick me on HBP meds or something. Maybe I ought to look into the local HEMA groups or something so I can at least change it up.

I read a book series called The Mongoliad that might be of interest in this thread. The basic story is a group of European knights resisting Mongol invaders in Eastern Europe. Anyway, the authors practiced and used European martial arts to write/choreagraph fight scenes.

Thanked: 1160People who practice HEMA actually use written historical treatise for the specific weapon of choice. i.e there are actual Naval manuals for cutlass and Hussar treatise for saber and so forth. The idea is to use and learn from real historical text in order to preserve the true integrity of the art. Therefore you have to use said materials to be accepted in the HEMA world for tournaments.
