The garden this year was a disappointment
The 6 Roma plants produced about 4 tomatoes each :( no really we got about 2 dozen tomatoes
I will say the Shrimp Pomodoro Capalini and the Pizza Margherita tasted awesome but I think I can maybe get one more dish out of it..
That late June freeze stunted it pretty bad...
I am on the hunt now for old Windows to build some "Cold Boxes" before next year
STEWED TOMATOES
12 med tomatoes, scalded & peeled
1 med green bell pepper, cut and diced
1 Large onion chopped
1-2 stalks celery, chopped & diced
2 Tbs oil
1 Tbs sugar
1 tsp salt and dash of pepper (to taste)
(can use crushed red pepper if you like spicy)
4 slices day old stale bread, tear into pieces
4 Tbs butter ( not margarine) melted
Heat the Oil in a saucepan.
Chop Onion, Pepper, & Celery,
Add to Oil and Cook over Med Heat till good and tender.
Cut up the Scalded and Peeled Tomatoes, and add to the same pan.
Add: the Sugar, Salt and Pepper.
Reduce the Heat to Med Low (Simmer) and Cook overMed. Heat till tomatoes are tender.
Pour into Shallow Baking dish.
Top tomatoes with the Stale Bread (white bread)
Pour Melted Butter over Bread .
Bake in 400 degree oven, till bread is golden Brown.
This makes 6-8 servings.

The main problem I see with this recipe is that here the peppers are going nuts and this recipe only calls for one medium green one.... :D

My box of potatos and my single garlic, oh ajd my rosemary plant. Hopefully the start of my daughter getting into growing. Also cultivating a thyme plant in the kitchen. But that probably wont head outside till spring.

I returned home yesterday after almost 52 days in the San Diego area/I left on the 4th of September and asked my son to keep an eye on the place/water/mow etc. I also asked him to pick the tomatoes and either use them or give them away.
Well the lawn looked nice but the tomato plant------

While there are many, many green toms and some ripe ones, apparently something caused a problem--most of the toms have this on them--

And there are many that look like this--I 'think' that the weather turned cool and damp but I'm not sure--

I'll be going through tomorrow and see if there are any usable toms.
All in all I'm very pleased with how many toms I got before I left. I do think I'll see if I can get a plant started earlier next spring.

the aquaponics setup. Still a pilot idea/plan. Learning as we go. Tilapia in tanks, closed loop system. Grows leafy plants like a champ. Experimenting with a few different sunflowers at this time. Dont have updated pics. Can add soon if anyone was interested. We do have basil, chamomile, dill, 1 bell pepper, 1 jalepeno, lettuce, cabbage, mint, spearmint, celery . Tomatoes are done, and whiteflies swarmed. Trying ladybugs and green lacewings to get it under control. Trying to keep it natural, and am limited on pesticide that case be used due to the aquatic life. And, I like to keep it as natural as possible. Just started some seeds- they are collards, mustard greens and a small pepper variety. As soon as they sprout, we will add them to the raft grow area. Hopefully I loaded pictures properly, was my first attempt! Good luck to all the other sod busters.

Different acids and flavors from the green.
JMHO I don't use the green earlier but this time of year it is the time to use what you have and celebrate it.
If both the green and red toms didn't have what I consider the start of decay I'd be happy to try to use them.Quote:
