Thread: Favorite Pipe Place?

My locals (when i'm in college, Flint, MI) are Pauls Pipe Shop (home of the world championship pipe smoker... ??) and Sunrise Coast Tobacco.
Have gotten decent english blends from both, though varying quality. The last batch I got from Sunrise was so moist that it would not light... I had to leave it in open air for a few days before it would burn..

Does anybody know of a good one in the Philadelphia area?
I've had to buy most of my tobacco online since the local shoppes seem to cater more towards cigar smokers.

Thanked: 1There is nothing close to where I live- the Golden Leaf in Uptown (Minneapolis) is good, too far to drive for me, though.
The few tobacco shops around here have gone out of business. The local casino/reservation has a walk in humidor, but selection is hit and miss- and mostly cigars.
They mostly just stock commercial pipe tobacco.
I too, use mail order most of the time now.Last edited by Brewman; 03-01-2008 at 03:01 PM. Reason: mis spelled words

There used to be a great shop in Chestnut Hill but since it has been years, I totally forget the name and have no idea whether it's still there.
Just did a search... it was the Pipe Rack!

Is it still there? Beats me, I'd call first! But that place used to be awesome.

Thanked: 3I've been off the pipe recently, but who knows when I'll pick it up again. Out here, there's not much in the way of smoke shops. When I lived in Boston, there were a few. L. J. Peretti's by the Commons was the place I'd go to look at and buy pipes. Leavitt & Pearce in Harvard Square is where I would go for tobacco.
The pipes were cheaper and the selection better at Peretti's, but I always found the staff a little condescending and with the tobacco jars all behind the counter I would end up being subjected to lectures as if I knew nothing about tobacco. Leavitt & Pearce had the advantage of having the tobacco jars out in front, so I could take a sniff and a look. Plus, the staff was a lot more friendly; I don't know whether it's because they were younger or used to a more varied clientelle. At any rate, I had a nice one-two set up for my tobacco needs.

If you are ever in Charlotte NC, there is a great pipe shop called McCranie's. It is in Park Road Shopping Center. You can usually find about 5 guys sitting around smoking pipes and cigars and hashing over the political machinations of the day...

Here in Dayton we have The Wharf. It is an enormous store, one of the largest in the state, cigars, role your own tobacco, pipes, you name they have it along with a smoking room. It has been a couple years since I was there, and it is just down the street. I will have to take my camera and take a photo of the place.
