well done... we can tell when our kettle has run out of water as all the kids start getting nose bleeds from the dry air.

Nuthin' finer than sittin' in front of the fire with your favorite pipe and a cup of coffee in the mornin', or a brandy in the evenin'!

If the thing has an afterburning valve, learn to use it well. Makes a big difference in wood consumption and for the environment.

    Nice one.
Got a friend with an oxy torch to build one out of a 44 Gal drum when I lived near the snow, similar to this one.
    Toasty warm eh.

We had open fireplaces & wood stoves the whole time i was growing up, & till i was about 25. The cottage i live in has had the chimneys ripped out by a previous owner. I miss them terribly, & they are definitely one of the finer things in life! Enjoy it!

Ah yes, memories. During the oil crisis in the late 70s, my father went a little nuts and installed a huge Vermont Castings Defiant wood stove in our basement to heat the whole house. I think we went through something like 15 cords of wood each winter - and my brother and I were responsible for humping every one of those logs from the yard to the basement - and that was miserable. Especially with two feet of snow on the ground.

I quickly learned while splitting and hauling wood for my Grandparent's wood stove these two things:
    1. If your doing the cutting, splitting, and hauling, your going to be warm twice.
    2. My wife could contentedly watch me split wood for hours. If only she could do the same when I was drinking beer, I might be the world's happiest man!
