Thanked: 131Things done better in the past vs better in present
I had difficulty coming up with a title for this thread so forgive the title but anyway.
I was thinking of a number of things and whether they have improved or not. Whether it is better now or whether it was better in the past. I`ll give you an example:
Shaving- I believe personally that shaving has gotten worse in general. The move from the straight razor to present Crap3 is one in the wrong direction. Straight razor shaving, done properly, will do your skin less damage and give you a smoother closer shave than current market razors.
Now I stress this is simply my own personal opinion, and as such feel free to pipe up and tell me you disagree. Also no long-winded explanation is necessary. But I ask you guys- what others do you have? Here is another I can think of;
Lawn mowers: Hand pushed to motor driven: IMPROVEMENT
What can you guys come up with?

Shaving is probably not worse than it used to be in the olden days.
We have nortons, coticules, eschers, chromium oxide, ...
Your average Joe Public in 'Ye Olden Days' probably had 1 stone, or maybe none, and used only a strop and 1 razor.
For most people, shaving was a chore then as it is now.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
To spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the Last Day

Thanked: 131In my experience shaving is a chore only if you dont take time to do it properly and enjoy yourself in doing it. Which is kinda why I was so narked by reading another thread.... one whose title escapes me right now.
Either way, this is totally . Back to the subject matter....

We used to socialise better in the past - now we do it on places like this. Pubs were wonderful places to meet, chat, play pool and darts... difficult to find a good pub like that now. People drink at home much more, play Doom against someone in Taiwan and avoid meeting people up town by getting the supermarket to drop thus avoiding the shop.
'Better' is very subjective. Technology is just offering us more choices to spend our time. How that works in the pursuit of happiness is highly debatable.

Thanked: 22Hmm, I quite prefer the old push mowers, but not those new crappy aluminium jobbies that the blades stop spinning coz a tiny twig gets caught, but the good old fashioned ones. But when it comes to mowing lawns for a living, which I did for a bit, then yes the motor mowers are good too.
In the old days honour was a very important thing, but these days there seems to be very little.

Thanked: 1The problem with reminiscing about times gone past is that it's typically romanticized. You talk of honor, and I agree that old fashioned honor is something that is almost lost these days. But you go back fifty years to go get that honor and along with it comes sexism and racism, and then that begets the question: where was the honor in that? Sure you could argue in the classical sense that the sons of slaves are slaves as well, etc. And while that does make sense, my upbringing tells me it's a load of poop.
