Western Swing is fantastic but hard to find. Overall i think I like Miller the best but Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and others are fantastic. Benny Goodman's "Sing Sing Sing" is (IMO) the best swing tune of all time.

I think one of the better but underrated modern swing bands was Indigo Swing but I don't think they are together anymore.

I don't have much use for jazz myself but I certainly can respect the contributions it has made to many other musical forms that I enjoy like rock and swing.

Thelonious Monk is my favorite be-bop artist. Also check out Bill Frisell's stuff - he's a sort of jazz americana rock country fusion type guitar player. Very tasteful. Very good.

For a nice chill jazzy type album check out Kenny Wheeler's "Angel Song". . .

for some great western swing check out Bob Wills, and a newer band, The Hot Club of Cowtown. Amazing stuff.

    Default jazz and swing

i do agree about the "old skool" swing bands such as the late great glenn miller. i was exposed to this music by my father who was born in 1930. these bands were authentic and true musicians with real tallent. if you played a glenn miller lp or tommy dorsey lp or any of the other bands lp's and then went to hear them live ,you couldnt tell the dif. no electronic tweaking or stuff of that nature as today. but there are great musicians in the jazz and swing worl today the would have fit right in back in the day. thanks for listening to me rant on

Try listening to some of these from him:

    Moonlight Serenade
    Pistol Packin' Mama
    The GI Jive
    By The Waters of Minnetonka
    April in Paris
    String of Pearls
    American Patrol
    Ciribiribin
    Sentimental Journey
    Stormy Weather
A Nightengale Sang in Barkley Square
    Perfidia

    Listen to the Andrews Sisters:
    Beer Barrel Polka
    Run, Rabbit, Run
    I've Got No Strings
    Donkey Serenade
    Rum and Coca-Cola

Listen to Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Al Dexter, Hellen O'Connell. To name just a few.

As you can tell, I'm much more into the old stuff, though I do certainly enjoy some of the new stuff. As for jazz, I never really got into it. I loved playing the trumpet and I loved brass and all, but I dunno, I stuck to swing.
Yes, I'm in to the old stuff, too. - especially, Benny Goodman!

BTW, trivia question: What was the 1st gold record (sales of over a million)?

    * The top of your list, Glenn Miller's, "Moonlight Serenade"

I will not say anything about the comparison between new and old jazz/swing. I'll have to listen to the new first.

    Default Pandora.com

Okay - I went to www.pandora.com - I dialed up "Big Bad Daddy Voodoo"

I gave him a whirl, and I can honestly say, "I didn't care for him that much"!

BUT - I really like Pandora - I have dialed up Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Dave Grusin (jazz of the 70's), etc..

I am presently listening to David Sanborn's "Acazar" - I love it!!

    * I just put in a new computer with a Bose sound system *

    Thanks fer the tip,

    Steve

Shoot, Brian Setzer, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli and Art Tatum are all I listen to in the jazz and swing genre.

The problem I've found with the new swing is that they focus on JUST the "In the Mood" style songs. All the upbeat get out on the dance floor "Swing Swing Swing" kind of songs. I enjoy those but I also really enjoy being able to sit back and listen to a nice slower song like Moonlight Serenade or the likes. Thats why I can only listen to Setzer and Voodoo Daddys for so long.

I love some good jazz man. We actually had a discussion on this in the chat last night, so here are some more suggestions:

Weather Report (Birdland - always a classic), Thievery Corporation (Check out Lebanese Blonde and Shadows of Ourselves), Yoko Kanno (anything from the Cowboy Bebop OST. She has some amazing jazz pieces.)

Yes Pandora used to be just for Americans, but they would just ask for your Zip Code, so I lived in Beverly Hills

Now they do a lookup on your IP address to see where you are located, so you can't do that. It was a very sad day when I lost my station. There is a couple other sites that can be used for music ( thesixtyone is more of unheard of people. You post and give props to new artists and get to listen to different types of music).

As for the jazz or swing, I love my jazz. It really just chills me out after a long day of work, or when I am trying to code and just think about other things while trying to work.
