No such thing as a bad time to mention grits! Since I've got the Northern blood, I never had grits until I joined the service. And I treated them like any other hot cereal...butter and sugar. My fiance spent a good part of her life in Georgia, and she has told me the error of my ways. I've since had cheese grits, and one of these days she promises to make cheese and shrimp grits! I feel like Andrew Zimmern!

There's no good time to mention grits...I'm not a big fan of eating anything that has been soaked in Lye for an extended period of time.
Back to the steel cut oats...I've no time to cook them in the morning, but a crock pot on low overnight wakes you to a wonderful aroma and ready to eat oats.
In a pinch, I'll prepare Old Fashioned Rolled Oats, but have to draw the line when it comes to 'Minute' Oats...I'd rather eat the box they came packaged in--it would have more flavor.
Cheers,
Ed

I eat steel cut oats every day and have for years. I actually bring a bowl with me to the shop on workdays. My recipe is half cup of oats, 2 cups of water, with ten minutes left I add a diced apple. After it cools a bit I add soy milk, walnuts, flax seed and a sliced banana. Stir it up cover with Glad Wrap and I eat it at room temperature a few hours later.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I eat the blue menu multi-grain oats with 2 tablespoons of flax seed that I ground into a powder form, flax seed in-cased in it's shell doesn't have time to break down itself in the body. Then I add a handful of raisins & a teaspoon if honey.Boiling water of course.
Saturday & Sunday It's bacon & eggs or steak & eggs.
I don't think I've seen McCanns in the grocery store. I'll check next time as
you make it sound so good.

Thanked: 3Love em ! My breakfast of choice 3-4 days a week. Usually cook mine in the microwave with raisins, blueberries, or cranberries for about 4-minutes on high. When done I add a tablespoon if brown sugar, stir and eat .

Thanked: 4You know it's sacrilege to eat porridge with anything but a little salt over here.
Only a sassenach would add anything sweet to oats.
Unless that is you're just having brose, where you put boiling water over the oats in a bowl or cup and cover it for a few minutes to allow the oats to soften a little. You follow this up by adding a little butter and milk, or cream.

No matter how you slice it, a good bowl of grits, maybe with a little salted pork, is heaven anytime of day.
