Thread: A Good Book

Greetings Gentlemen

As there seems to be a few book worms amongst us I figured we needed a book thread going on here too.

Spike and I have about 300 books gracing our (now very limited) shelves and have quite a wide taste range.

I know of 3 Terry Pratchett fans here so far, but who does everyone else read?

yup, I read a lot. I take the train these days, so there's even more time for reading!

At the moment, I have an embarassingly small library, just shy of 1000 books; as a child I was very lucky to live with 2 parents who both read a lot, there were floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in every room, I counted nearly 4 thousands books there once!

I enjoy books that are either informative or entertaining. some fiction writers I enjoy include Douglas Adams, Stephen Lawhead, Asimov, Stephenson, etc. I strongly dislike Tom Clancy and Stephen King but occasionally enjoy Koontz. Shakespeare is always a good read, as are Milton and Voltaire.

I'm kind of a book slut, though, I'll read anything once.

Frank Herbert (Dune) and his son Brian Herbert (also Dune series)

Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time)

uhm...that dude that wrote Aragon and it's sequel.

Orson Scott Card (Ender series and Giant series.)

Douglas Adams (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series)

There's gotta be a few more....but I'll be damned if I know them from of the top of my head.

+100 for the Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth series - a totally epic tale.
the Wheel of time was great until book 6 or so then it kind of lost its way and the last 2 have been utterly dreadful. I'm awaiting the ghost written final book with some trepidation.

Every series has it's good and bad points. In the Sword of Truth series I felt the Naked Empire was a damn waste of time. Others like Faith of the Fallen however I kept reading again and again.

No book in the series is better than the first one however.

I do have 1 issue with that series though.

In the first book something happends at the end, something with melting stone.....this doesn't get resolved to my feeling in the entire series.

Annoys the hell out of me because it's probably my favorite series other than that.

For fiction:
I always recommend these two Authors

Stephen Hunter "Point of Impact" and "Time to Hunt" these are the books that the movie with Mark Whalberg "The Shooter" were loosely based on

Jean Auel - The Earth Children series "Clan of the Cave Bear" and the sequels


Some new names to the techno thriller game that I have enjoyed are Vince Flynn "The Mitch Rapp" books, Kyle Mills , and Clay Harvey.... The old names I read too Tom Clancy, Dale Brown, and Stephen Coonts

Of course the "Prey" series by John Sanford is always at the top of my must read list when a new one comes out....

We don't have a TV in the house (it's toxic) so, in the evenings, my wife and I read outloud to each other. We just finished reading the seven volumes of Proust's "Remembrance of things past". It took us 2 years. Now we've started Bouvard & Pecuchet by Flaubert.

I travel to Japan from Boston a couple times a year on business. It's about 24 hours door to door, so I use that opportunity to get some reading done (I don't tget to read much at home with a 3year old and a 1 1/2 year old...)

Good boooks I've read:

"Life of Pi"- very interesting, suprising, and a great story.

"Confederacy of Dunces"- Funny book with great characters

"Crime and Punishment" Classic. Dostoyevsky always has great characters and dialouge. C&P is a must read. I'm a fan of all of Dostoyevsky's work, his short story collection are also wonderful.

"Treasure Island" Not just for kids!

Jack London. Short story collections are great for traveling.

Well other than Pratchett I like Clive Barker, Anne McCaffrey, Graham Masterton, Richard Laymon, Koontz, Brian Lumley, James Herbert (No relation to the Dune Herberts).

King I occasionally do, but he drives me crazy getting to the point, takes far, far too long! Tolkein is also a must, I was gutted when they cut Tom Bombadil out of the movie.

For an easy read I like Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake series, and there isn't much other vampire stuff out there at the moment, seems the fad is over.

of all the things they screwed up when they made those movies, that was by far the thing that irritated me the most. coolest character in the entire series, and they just binned his part >:-O
