There are a lot that I like but some off the top of my head.

    War and Peace
    Lord of the rings
    Wes'har series by Karen Traviss
Stranger in a strange land and Starship troopers by Robert Hienlein

    I like the thicker ones.

    They burn longer.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

Yep. That whole series is about a year's worth of literary digestive material. I've done all six books a couple of times.

One that I didn't mention though - A day in the life of Ivan Denisovich (sp?)

The Bible for me, but there are many others that I can't think of right now besides The Lord of the Rings.

To be honest, I really dislike the movie version of Cuckoo's Nest-- but it is my favorite book.

As much as I love the movie, A Clockwork Orange, it doesn't even hold a candle to the book. IMO, it's one of the most under-rated novels of our time; the way that Burgess wrote it was absolutely brilliant. Right, right, right!

Chay I feel the same way with the movie Blade Runner. I just can't enjoy it after reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Phillip K Dick.

I'm bit surprised at all that a bunch of straight shavers live zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance. It's fits us perfectly. As does Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. I'm about to start The Pale King by him. He's a tough author to read but brilliant.

Other favorite authors that come to mind are Saramago, Steinbeck, Waltari (Finnish, probaby never translated into English), Eco, Dostoyevski, Conrad, only to name a few.
