Not sure why the double post, sorry.
We had our much loved 13&1/2 year old Golden Retriever Bentley put down at noon yesterday. He was worn out and had not been able to stand up unassisted for the past month or so. Once up he could walk for a few minutes but that was the extent of it. He was scared and wanted constant company to help reassure him through these difficult past few weeks. We were up at all hours of the night to stroke him and express our love until he fell back asleep. He was a shinning star among our many wonderful dogs over the years. Tuesday night his breathing was very labored and we finally got him to rest with his head on his favorite pillow. Yesterday we held him and said good by with many tears and words of comfort. All of us who love our pets understand that letting go is our final responsibility and reward for their dedicating their lives to us. RIP Bentley you were Californias Gold and will always have a place in our hearts. A pic of Ben as a pup and a pic at the peak of his
life just having had a swim in the Carmel River and the ocean on the California coast.

Great photos Bob,,,a beautiful dog indeed.
You'll see him again someday, just not for a while,,,,
My heart goes out to you for your loss. My dog Sebastian sits on my mantel. His box contains his ashes, his collar and leash. My big boy cat, Prince and his mother, Lil Mama are in little wooden boxes on my work table where I eat breakfast with them every morning. They are gone, but they are still here. In our hearts. In our thoughts. And in every waking moment of every day. Their sister/daughter reminds me daily of how fortunate I am to have and have had these little soul mates. The Universe will bring the next phase of animal presence to you, but probably when you least expect it.
There is nothing I can say to ease your pain, but I feel you bud......
My girl Zoey and I express our sorrow for your loss. Also, she wants some of my cheese and crackers.
Sorry for your loss Bob :( Pets are like family and it hurts to lose family…he's in a better place now.
Deeply sorry for your loss. Sounds like you had a great friend.
I'm very sorry to hear about Bentley. He sounds like a wonderful dog and I hope your memories of him last a lifetime.
Im so sorry to hear of your loss :( It sounds like he was very lucky to have you, and vice versa. Ive been through this a few times myself, is always heartbreaking. I dread the day when I have to say goodbye to my Pete, but of course it is inevitable.
Ok, some pics of my dog... He was a rescue dog, originally guide dog trained. The first pic is him as a youngster while still with the guide dogs, a few years before I got him... The next is a fat pic of him when I got him (54kg). He is now down to 38 but has another 5 or so to go. The pics in the car are just for a bit of fun, its how he likes to travel.

For all the dog lovers, here is a good watch, and what all our best friends are descended from, very intelligent animals.
LOBO THE WOLF THAT CHANGED AMERICA - YouTube
Read a recent Science report that dogs are not descended from wolves, but they shared a common ancestor, much likes humans and Great Apes,
That's true. And by nature, most dogs are very very afraid of the wolves. During last ten years or so wolves have become more common here in the south, they come and go every now and then.
It's easy to tell about the behavior of our dogs when the wolf has been around recently. Usually i keep my dogs loose when doing my evening walk, but where the wolf has gone recently, the dogs just stick by me side and do not want to run free.
I've nothing against wolves, but on the forest trails and backroads without streetlights and not much population either or i usually carry a knife with me. Maybe it's just a psychological support for myself.
I've seen wolves from a distance few times. They are beautiful animals, surely something worth my deep respect. However, seeing one is very rare, usually they keep away from humans.
Your right. Once attended dog training with a fantastic mix bred that I had. About 5 classes in a women bring a young puppy in that her husband had 'found' in the woods while hunting. A Coydog pup. Quite young. Wow you should have seen the reaction of "all" the dogs in the class! They wanted nothing to do with the puppy, the class or the room!
I've always been interested in the domesticated wolf's being raised here in the US. Many think my male German Shepherd is part wolf, but the domesticated wolves I have seen are even bigger...pushing the 150lb mark & my male GSD is about 115lbs. .
Shooter, I have heard that the wolf/dog mixes have some psychological issues. We did have one living outside town growing up. It was big and "not quite there".
Of what i've heard, you can't raise wolf the way you could raise a dog. It will always be at least partly a wild animal you can't 100% trust.
Surely you could raise it 'til some point but it is not the same as dog. Dogs have learned to live with people; they are sort of cultured to live with us during the last thousands of yours. The ones with the bad (or incompatible genes) have been breed away. You can raise even the wild dog if you get it as a puppy but not wolf.
And i guess it wouldn't be life worth the wild nature of the wolf.
Ok finally had a chance to get a pic. Here is the Lighting beast.Attachment 154748
My sister's BIG white dog Yeti is part wolf and has turned out to be one of the finest dogs any of us have known. Started out as a complete wingnut, but from about the age of two or so he settled down to become one of the smartest, most affectionate, and empathetic animals I have ever known. He will still occasionally go and visit his cousins when they howl, but he always comes back filthy, tired, and with a big old dog smile on his face.
Wild animals are just that. It doesn't matter whether it's a dog or a bear or a lion. Folks raise wild animals from young all the time and the smart folks realize you can never truly trust them. The dumb folks wind up in the headlines with their scalps torn off (if they're lucky). When a bear or a lion is having a bad day and you are interacting with them it never turns out good for the human.
Few action pics and one formal pose from this morning:

Now here is my buddy! His name is Samson and he is an Australian Shepard. Samson is probably my best friend in the entire world, and I have never had the honor of sharing in life with a more intelligent or loving dog. Hell even when I am napping on the couch this dog will come up and literally lay on top of me. Then he will start cuddling me. Damn silly dog...Attachment 154873Attachment 154870Attachment 154871Attachment 154872
Heck I even taught this goofy dog to do a touchdown dance and to go get me a beer from the fridge.
If you can't figure out what it is. It is drool connecting from each of his jowls. LOL. This is on a cool day. If it were hot, it would be hanging on the ground already.
Having fun in a ditch full of water. Ain't no fun after getting back home: floors will be damn wet for sure.
