Here's what I was trying to explain about my dog being able to do the shepherd ears whenever he wants to. Then can put them into lab mode . He escaped into the hallway of the apartment yesterday and caused a ruckus. I guess he didn't want me to leave hahaha.
Lord love em. If nothing else dogs make you laugh.
We don't have a problem with her biting, this dog loves everyone,, she jumps in the mail ladies truck everyday to greet her at the mailbox! But she will make the mean face showing teeth for you come near her bone. Then she's a 6 pound Tasmanian devil. Tc
TC, those smaller ones are the ones that you have to watch...they have cajones!
Haircut day!

We look great still, no need to spend all that money on us!

Ok, we do feel better now, thanks dad, now give us that bacon in your hand...
:D
If anybody happens to know of a dutch shepherd breeder that is good, I'd be grateful. Been looking for an addition to our pack for a bit now.
My Carmen passed two weeks ago.

It doesn't get much cuter than that.
Sorry for your loss Doc, she was a beauty.
Obviously well loved & cared for, Doc.
Thank you all for your well wishes. I have had Basilio 14 years and Carmen had recently turned 13. She developed congestive heart failure and that appears to be the cause of death. She died in her sleep on her pillow, next to Basilio and at my feet while I was watch Sports Center. Not a bad way to go, but she is missed.
my house has to many dogs but we have a funny husky, lab mix that sleeps all day, and a German shepherd derp.
I have a blue heeler (now known as an Australian cattle dog I believe) X jack russel. He is almost 4 years old and I got him when he was 10 weeks old and he was skin and bone.

Doc, I just discovered this thread. I am so very sorry about your loss. As my sainted mother would have told you (RIP), I have been dog-crazy since I was old enough to crawl. I have had dogs all of my life (many different breeds) except when I was away at college. I have Cocker Spaniels now, and lost one three years ago (I rescued two of them from a kill shelter about 13 years ago). My remaining gal is still with me at 14, although blind now from sudden onset glaucoma. But she is still a sweetheart and does very well with just her nose and hearing without her sight, especially at her age. It is going to absolutely slay me when she goes.
My deepest sympathies for the loss of your best friend.

I'm so sorry about Carmen, Dan. I had just given our Gretchen her third cardiac medication when I read your post. She's also 13 and went into stage 4 CHF a few months ago. Fortunately, we were able to rush her to a veterinary cardiologist not far from our home, and she stabilized on three medications. However, if we're just a couple hours late in giving one of them to her, she starts to have difficulty breathing. I'm now thankful for each day that we have with her. I'll bet Basilio misses her.
Richard, He and I both miss her. Carmen had just started her 3rd CHF medication 3-days prior to her passing. Basilio has been dealing with her loss by asking for treats all day long! Food and treats are such a comfort thing for him, and he now gets 100% of my attention, which he demands constantly now. He is lonely and it shows. I hope Gretchen does well on her medications for a long time. Thank you my friend.
Here's a couple of my former friends.

The pain when they leave never hurts less, but the love they unconditionally offer while they are with us is worth that foregone conclusion.. IMO
Makes us kinder, better people overall than we might ought be in their absence..

This wonderful pup was the smartest dog I have ever met. My family got him when I was an impressionable 13 years old and he graced our lives for 16 years. He was a better brother than my own brother and lived to make people laugh.
When my parents brought him to the vet the last time, he hustled (as much as the arthritis and blood loss would allow) to an older lady. He pestered her for attention and made her laugh with his antics. When my mother was waiting for the doctors to do their thing and my father held him, she over heard that that lady was having issues paying for the vet bill. This was because she lost her husband last year and the resulting income put her in a serious bind with her dogs medical conditions. Moe knew immediately that she needed comfort, even in his last minutes, he wanted to help and make people smile.
My life may be substantially emptier without you, booger butt. But it would have been crap if you never blessed me with your presence. May there be more spaghetti sauce than you can handle, wherever you are.
Here is something I didn't know and think all dog owners should know. I awoke this morning and found my 14 year old Basilio in a bad way. He was uncoordinated, could not walk a straight line (I did the field sobriety test) and had a bad head tilt. My first though was that he had been poisoned by eating a dead insect or animal. In panic I called the vet and went right in.
Attachment 269819Attachment 269820
Once at the Vet, Basilio's doctor came right out and took a look at him and started back to the examination rooms. She turned and said, "I know what it is and he will be fine". Better words I've not heard. So here is the diagnosis: Basilio has an age related syndrome that causes vertigo, this I was told is not uncommon in old dogs and will usually pass in 24-48 hours. She gave him a shot for nausea and sent me home will pills for the next 14 days. I make this post because I thought Basilio was dying and I was told by the vet that that is a very common home diagnosis. I had never heard of this and hope it passes quickly. So should you encounter this problem you know what to do now and won't panic like me.
I still think I have the meanest looking dog around, but this one actually stole my heart I,m a mean ole gorilla with a 5 pound Yorkie TC

Our GSD/Husky girl, Cairo, passed away in 2013. When my boys were born she was already a 10 yo grouch. She never really warmed up to our kids but when anybody walked into the room or you we just had them in front of the house she always quietly positioned herself between the kids and whoever was visiting. Sort of saying, I might not like them but I will protect them.
Interestingly those 2 pics are taken 3 days apart in south west Missouri. It was at the end of January, it went from warm to a massive snowstorm. Then in May we had an EF5 tornado.

My cherished Basilio passed today August 3rd, two moths to the date his partner Carmen passed. It is a sad and empty house tonight!
Attachment 270139
Basilio on the left and Carmen on the right. They are together and running like hell again!
It is with deep sorrow that I hear of this news, Dan. I am so very sorry. Those of us that love dogs as family members know your grief all too well. But as you say, they are now together again, and running like the wind. Take solace in that.
My beloved Cocker is approaching 15, and she's blind now from sudden onset Glaucoma. Her brother passed 5 years ago and when she goes, she will take my heart with her. I dread that day. But a new puppy will be close behind after I grieve a while.
When the time is right, you will get more four legged children. For now, my heart goes out to you for the loss.

i ka mea, hoʻomaha me ka maluhia
(May they rest in peace as the Hawaiians say)
Thank you my friend for the soft kind words. Basilio's condition deteriorated very quickly over the past week. Whatever he contracted caused great swelling of the brain causing the loss of vision in his right eye. For 48 hours he has only moved with my help, and water was all he would take for for the last 7-days. He was very weak. The little joy I have at this moment is knowing that when he awoke this morning he was much more alert and responded to his name. We had a nice morning together before we went to the vet's at 3. He passed easily with his head on my one hand and my other hand was on his heart. The last couple of days were really bad for him. If I lifted him he would have diarrhea or urinate (I have a very pretty white carpet) and those stains will not full come up. The carpet cleaner said it was a shame it happened on the carpet, and my response was, he had to be by my side; the carpet can be replaced. Time will heal the pain of loss and he will always remain in my heart. Right now he running with Carmen again.
I happen to think two dogs in the house is the right number. They usually become great friends and comfort each other. Although one is fine as well. I rescued two Cockers from kill shelters. Kirby (Left) was 8 when I adopted him, and Cydney (Right) was 1. This is a picture of them enjoying each other's company about 10 years ago when Kirby was 10 and Cyd was 3. Kirby passed about 5 years ago and Cyd is still with me at 14 years old. She's blind now with sudden onset Glaucoma, but still very sweet. She was a trooper and adapted to her blindness better than I would have it I were in her place. Dogs really can rely on scent and hearing. I decided to pass on getting another companion for her because she did surprisingly well on her own after Kirby's passing. But when she goes, after I get over the gut wrenching heart break, I'll adopt two more from a shelter.

I am so sorry for your loss, especially 2 months after your other beloved pet. It's like losing your own child. yes, the carpet can be replaced & it will take some time. Someone poisoned a dog of mine 18 years ago & it tore me up really bad. It took me awhile to get over the main part of it but I still can't get over the fact someone did that to my beloved pet just to get into my home & take some things.
My prayers are with you my friend.
Beautiful dogs Dan, and Alex.
Sorry for you both.
Dan, their passing so close, another proof of their bonds depth.
There is some solace in that, and you said it well. They run together still..

You ever come across something and think WTF is all this?
We are doing a yard makeover and I had to pull down the steps from the kitchen that went over this window well.
