I had a Miniature Schnauzer growing up he, was as old as me. I have fond memories of him, his name was Fritz, lived until he was 16.
I've been trying to convince my wife that we should get one. She doesn't like their beards. But I think they're a nice size dog. I don't really remember Fritz's temperament other than he didn't listen real well, I take it your's does well with kids?
My Bedlington Terrier Oscar just turned 1 year old, doing some rest and relaxation.

My dog Dutch is excellent with kids, he has alot of energy and listens pretty good but he is still a terrier. If your wife doesn't like his beard, cut it off. We have trimmed his beard flush with his bottom jaw and he still had the schnauzer look without having to wash his face all the time.
This is a pic from when we had his beard trimmed short.

I'm sorry to hear that. How is your other pup taking it?
I don't have a dog...I have a grumpy old cat(that I love)...so I am giving mental hugs and biscuits to all the woofers I see here. Hope y'all don't mind ....:)
While I may have just lost my avatar, Lil Mama, before her I had a Min-Poodle/Shellti(sp) mix for 16 years. What a wanderer, followed his nose anywhere anytime he could get out alone. Kudos to all the dogs and their owners.
