After our two precious dogs passed away in less than a month apart we and missing them very much for quite a while we decided to buy a new best friend. We had 3 dogs so far. A golden retriever wich died 10 years ago. A South African Boerboel and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (they both passed away a few months ago)
Now we are going for a Goldendoodle. He will be joining our family on the 12th of january. Our new buddy Lewis at 4 weeks old.

Thanked: 1587My husky cross Mabel has gone Brazilian for the summer. Not a moment too soon either - the gauge hit 45 C a little while ago.

Everything I have read has said to never clip a Husky. Except for medical reasons. Around here Summers are around 37 to 40 degrees, but 45 does happen. My Husky, being the spoiled bitch that she is, has the option of staying in the air conditioned house. They say if they are clipped short, they lose the ability to regulate their temp and may have heat stroke. She's three yrs old now, and she has been putting on less and less of a "winter" coat every year. Her hair is thin right now, but we are having the driest and warmest winter on record. Heck, today was 18.8 for a high, no rain and none in sight. But, you know your dog, if she does well with a haircut, great. She looks like a fun dog. I love my Husky, don't know what I'd do without her.

Thanked: 1587This is the first time we've ever shaved her actually, in 10 years. I'm sincerely hoping what you've read about heat stroke is wrong - I just got on a husky/dog site and found a sticky that only mentioned increased risk of sunburn in the main section, though there seemed to be this one guy going on about death from heat stroke - I'm hoping he's one of those crackpot forum members pushing some agenda.
From what I read in this sticky, apparently dogs regulate temperature through panting, blood flow in the ears (?) and something or other to do with the paws. If that's true clipping any dog is a pointless exercise except for aesthetics for the owners.
And, if all this is true then I am majorly pissed at the dog groomer who made me sit there and listen to her diatribe over the dog food industry ripping us all off with their petrochemical manufacturing blah blah when in fact she's as complicit in doing wrong things to dogs as she was accusing them of being.
Anyway, thanks donv for making me more aware of these things. Mabel seems fine, we got through yesterday OK. Maybe she's a bit less susceptible given she's half border collie, I dunno. I'll watch out for her over the next few weeks and have a chat with my vet. Maybe grab her a little doggie parasol!
James.
