Thread: Favorite Cigars

Hi all.
My favorite cigar of all time was a cuban cohiba piramides limited edition bought in cancun, that being the single best smoking experience in my life, it hasnt been matched by anything, not even by other cuban cigars including cohibas, i must add that even though cuban cigars can be very very good i truly believe they are over rated, the quality control sucks and in my own experience half of the time they are not good, its like gambling every time i buy a box, 60% of them are not that good, and of the rest that are decent are just not as good as they used to be...its like mercedes benz.....they are living off the reputation they built years ago.
In the other hand, cigars from dominican republic, nicaragua etc, are impecably made ,well presented and very consistent, that being imo the best quality of a cigar, consistency in the blend and in construction, every time i grab a cigar i want it to deliver what i am expecting from it,there is nothing more annoying that going to the garage and lighting up to realize that its plugged or doesnt taste the same....
Sorry for going there...i always do that when talking about cigars and i know its annoying, i can't control it, i think i have inner conflicts with the cuban cigar factories that are affecting my being and i promise i will seek advice and help towards my healing.....
Now, my favorite cigars, the ones i always keep a good stock of and i smoke all the time:
-romeo y julieta habana reserva
-cao black "vr"
-punch rare corojo.
-Tatuaje-specially lancero-
-Arturo fuente sun grown.
-montecristo classic.(the new line)
I have to mention that i really like fuente fuente opus x and winston churchill cigars....but due to their ridiculous price tag and unavailability can not be on my list, they are "superb" cigars, but worth the price?...its like having a $200 bottle of wine....yes its really good....but is it 10 times better than a "franciscan 2005 cabernet from Napa"? never.
Cigars imo like wine needs to meet a point between quality and price ratio thats some what decent, i think an achievement is when a cigar maker makes a great balanced, great tasting cigar thats well constructed in the price range of $80 to $120 a box, i like to support that effort , the effort of doing something good for the masses to enjoy.
Hope i didn't messed up the flow of the thread...cigars are VERY important in my life.

actually to expand more, cuban cigars of late are not that great. the hurricanes messed ****e up.
as far as cubans go, for the most part everyone in this blog probably has smoked a real cuban, but very rarely. think about it...you really think with the aging of cigars and the hurricanes some years back destroying the land that there are all those cigars around the world.
note: all the old school cuban rollers are in miami right now. so all the masters, the true craftsman are rolliing for "legal" cigar companies. and even they are having a hard time telling fakes from real ones because the rolling of the cigar has become so good. (im talking about looks of the cigar, not the smoke.)
of the hundreds of "cuban" ive smoked, id say maybe 20% were real.
of the 80% that were counterfeit, 70% of them were damn better then cigars being sold legally in the us.
thats just my 2 cents

Is it typical to be snooty about looks over taste? Honestly, you could hand me what looked like a stick of crap, and as long as it tastes phenomenal, I won't complain.
I say it isn't much to ask to get both...maybe I'm just naive

Thanked: 151I lived in the caribbean for two years and I actually think the cubans are the real deal. I admit though I judge a lot of cigars on strength and the after smoke taste. I am a mild/medium smoker but I admit I don't smoke but every so often.
Punch (cuban Royal Coronation)
Bolivar (Cuban No. 3)
Partegas 161 Dominican

Thanked: 53They seem to generate strong opinions both for and against but given my current unemployed status (3 months and counting ) I've been having A. Fuente Brevas for my everyday smoke lately. Not top of the line but for $2.25 at my local shop it's a great bargain and an enjoyable smoke. Just finished one with a couple of Smithwick's as a matter of fact.

Cuban RJY Churchill
Cuban Cohiba Magicos Maduro
Cuban Bolivar Royal Corona
Cuban Monte #2 (honorable mention)
Cuban Ramon Allones Specially Selected
Carlos ToranoExodus 1959 Exodus Torpedo
Most of my list is Cuban. I've found (and many other around the world, I might add) impeccable consistency from year to year with Cuban cigars.
Of course, tobacco is a natural product that can vary year to year. Thats why Cuban cigar manufacturers basically stockpile every year's crop and age it for at least three years. If one year is an oddball, they can blend it with other non-oddball years to continue the flavor profile consistency that is expected when one purchases a box of Cuban cigars.
If the consistency isnt there ... more than likely those cigars are fakes.
Counterfeiting Cuban cigars is a huge business. These counterfeitters collectively pull 9 figures out of the global cigar business annually.
There are many reasons why Cuban cigars are the best in the world. Just one of those reasons is consistency.
I've tried many Cubans ... and even some fakes. Even though the fakes were good to decent smokes, they were fakes and did not have the classic Cuban tobacco profile. That flavor profile doesnt variate very much year to year.
Also, aging the cigars does have something to do with the end product quality of cigar... but, thats a whole other thread ... lol

Finally in a place where I can enjoy one without smoking out the neighbors... yay for buying a house with a nice deck!
Anyway, I'm working my way through a nice set I got from Cigars International (along with a few other cigars) and so far really enjoyed the Gurkha Ltd. Master Select Robusto #4 and El Mejor Emerald.
When my humidor starts running low I'll have to use this thread to refill it. I'm more of a "try them all" kind of guy than a "find a favorite" kind of guy. I don't gargle my wine to bring out the taste or turn my nose up at the vintage. I drink it and if I like it I continue to drink it. Only apply that to cigars since I rarely drink wine.
Oh and I can't praise Cigars International enough. Give them a browse and try them out if you are shopping for a good stick or need accessories. My order went through quick and without problems and arrived faster than expected. It was all packed well and in great shape when it arrived too.
