This is a bit off topic, and I apolagize.But I was wondering: Is it true that you can shoot,and kill an intruder in the US without being punished for it?

You may not get in trouble if everything works out in your favor, but I think it will end up costing you a ton of money for a lawyer, not to mention you could be sued civilly by the bad guys family , it's definitly not something I ever want to go through. If someone is stealing my car , Im calling the police, if they are breaking in my house that is another story. Im still calling the police but if the intruder doesnt back off when I warn him, its gonna be a long night for everyone.

Finally got my XD 45 5" Bi-Tone Tactical ......they seem to be in short supply these days..grabbed a few extra hicap mags too

Do any of you guys know how it works for foreigners in the US on J1 visas, would it be possible for me to buy a handgun?

I don't think so. I believe you would end up on several secret government lists.

no far as I know

I can however recommend a solution to the laws.
GO AROUND

Cap and ball revolvers are not firearms under the law.
They are still weapons (no concealment), but not firearms.

If the concern was protection at home then I would say buy a 40+ caliber cap and ball.


ALSO, I saw mention of CPL, maybe you aren't just flying around for hours anymore...
but if you fly into Kissimmee let me know and we can go shooting

You may be surprised. It is legal for you to buy a handgun under federal law, but state laws vary. I know here in WA there is a bill being discussed in the state government for permitting resident aliens to obtain a conceiled carry permit. I suspect that you would be able to in Florida.

You will get some good information there, or at least pointed in the right direction.

Bear in mind, this is all concerning the right to carry a weapon on your person. AFAIK, there are NO restrictions on your ability to either purchase or own a handgun while residing in the US legaly.



EDIT: Acording to this site (pdf page, http://www.handgunlaw.us/documents/N...entPermits.pdf), it seems like you could get a permit to carry in FL. It says that you must reside in the US, not that you must be a citizen.

I'll post other sources if I can find something else.

Here's something else; "Eligibility Eligibility Requirements You must be a citizen of the United States OR you must be deemed a lawful permanent resident alien by the U.S. Immigration & Naturalization Service (U.S. INS). If you are not a citizen of the United States, you must submit documentation issued by the U.S. INS proving you are a permanent legal resident alien who has resided in your state of residence for at least 90 consecutive days prior to the date the application is submitted. ANSWER IS NO ! You must have an alien number to purchase and (I'm pretty sure) permanent resident to carry.
I go back to my old statement that if you MUST have a gun, get a cap n ball.

Plus I have to go to the office that doles out the permits this week, I'll ask them about the CCW.

Dang, I didn't realize it was a student visa. That and applying for a CCW permit would definatly raise the eyebrows of Homeland Security. That's a shame.

Thanks! I will def contact you if I am get some time on the ground in Kissimmee some time. Sounds like a lot of fun.

And I agree that it might rise some eyebrows in homeland security to try to get a CCW on a student visa for a flight student sounds smart to just not do it.
