Ok, don't take this the wrong way,but considering my culture this sounds insane! Do you americans realise the enormous difference between the US and europe?
Personally I like hunting, and I would actually like to own a hand gun for protection in my home.To get a pistol in Norway you have to be an active member of a club for two years. Then you can apply...
This is a bit off topic, and I apolagize. But I was wondering: Is it true that you can shoot, and kill an intruder in the US without being punished for it?

In Norway you would be convicted for murder even if the intruder was armed and had the intent to harm you or your family.....

    Default Basic firearms battery

After over 50 years of handling firearms here are my choices:

    Rimfires:

    Rifle Ruger 10/22
handgun Beretta Model 70 - if you can find one - no longer in production. Next choice Beretta
    Model 87.

Centerfire Springfield XD .45 ACP Tactical Model or 1911. If you can afford it buy a Thunder
Handguns Ranch Special - On a budget get a Taurus PT 1911.

Sigs, HK's and Rugers are all good weapons However the controls on the pistols are
awkward for a lot of people. The so called double action only triggers are not as
controllable as the single action pistols. Every tactical inovation is not always a tech
    nical advantage.

Glocks are probably the most reliable out of the box semi auto pistol made. I carried
one for over 10 years as a duty weapon. For some one who is not "into" guns it is
probably the best choice. I personally prefer the Springfield XD in this type of
    weapon.

Whatever your choice, get a reliable weapon, with a good trigger and sights, that
fits your hand and shoot the heck out of it.

Shotguns Remington 870 12 gauge pump. Most versatile scatter gun made. You can get any
barrel length from a 18 inch riot gun to a 30 inch. Choke tubes and barrel length
matched with the correct ammo for your purpose combine for a weapon you can
fight with, hunt and participate in sporting games. They are not expensive and will
    last forever.

    Rifles I no longer hunt. If I did i would get a bolt action, 30/06, mount a good 3 X 9
scope on it and go. It is not the perfect weapon for hunting wild boar in thick
cover or the bigger game, but a well placed 30/06 will handle about anything the
    average hunter will come across.

Defense If you live in an urban area - AR 15 - 223. Rural Area Springfield M1A 308.

I realize there are people who love their 28 gauge side by side double and others who like to shoot at
prarie dogs at 300 yards with a pistol. But for the average guy the above with take care of 90 % of his
    shooting.

PS Get a Smith and Wesson or old Colt Agent to carry in your pocket.

yes you can.. and in some cases you can shoot to kill if someone is in you yard. it will be investigated but usually is considered self defense. i really don't know the details,,,yet. you can probably search that on the internet and find out for sure. i think if someone else has a weapon and is trying to harm you it is ok to kill in order to save your own life.

i used to have a double action sig sauer 32 auto... man that was s sweet gun. i think i'm going to purchase a 9mm because the ammo is reasonably cheap.

I still enjoy them primarily for the social aspect of hearing and telling stories, and for the odds and ends you can get there just like at any flea market, except for a few cooler things.

Bought 2 new guns just this week myself. One was planned--an over-and-under .410/.45 LC derringer I've been thinking about for years since I saw the ad in the Texas State Rifle Association magazine. It's from Leiner of Tennessee and like any derringer, it's a trick-and-a-half to figure out how to work it, do the safety on and off, load and unload, and figure out how to make which barrel fire what load.

Other gun was partly impulse...I bought a used gun that I'd sold last year and regretted it ever since because I still have all the VERY EXPENSIVE ammo and lots of it...and you really can't use .50 magnum in anything but the Smitty 50 revolver!

(No, it was not the exact same gun...but a consignment that had never been fired.)

And yes, it still spanks my palm as hard as ever! But I like it that it comes straight back atcha, instead of muzzle-flipping like the .454 Casull. Plus, it is just an incredibly badass-looking gun. It's so huge it's almost outlandishly cartoonish...you can clean the barrel with your little finger with a .50!

Of course, when I was buying it down in San Antonio, I got the obligatory young male customer chortling at me and saying, "Lady, what are you going to use THAT for?"

I replied with a huge, wolfish grin, "Anything I WANT to!"

He laughed, and I considered saying something smart like, "So, young man, since we're asking questions, what are YOU planning to use that little gun YOU'RE buying for?" but my artificial knee was hurting and I just wanted to wrap up and sit down.

Hard-core gun gal, that's me. Gonna shoot me a deer on Sunday because we need more venison (we live on 16 acres.)
I've seen those derringers at my local range/store. They were called a snake eater or somesuch name like that. I sort of like the idea of a shotgun in my pocket- but that's just me

No, that's a popular myth; in my state anyway. The general rule is: "To use deadly force you must be in imminent and unavoidable danger of death or grave bodily harm.". (e.g. if an unarmed drunk enters your house by mistake and you shoot him: you are going to jail.)

There is one glaring difference between defending yourself in your home and on the street.
    • Outside your home you are required to retreat if you can do so without putting yourself, or other innocents, at greater risk.
    • In your home, there is no requirement to attempt any retreat (Castle Law).

In Norway you would be convicted for murder even if the intruder was armed and had the intent to harm you or your family.....
That sounds just plain crazy to me...
