This concoction would probably work with any inexpensive dark rum, I would not use a better rum for it as the spices are likely to mask it anyway.

Margarine? I don't know. I think it's a buttered rum drink and you should splurge. The amount of rum is up to you. I use about 4 shots but I don't measure it. Several good glugs. No science here, make it to your personal preference. Start light on everything and add more of what ever until you like it. I like adding a good buttered rum like Stroh's (Austrian, 160 proof) to hot apple cider. On the flip side, a big mug of gluhwein is great for chilly nights.
