I have a small collection of zippos but am no big authority on lighters in general. I do use them to light my cigars and pipes (I know, the smelll and fluid flavor). I just like the machine ka-chin sound that a zippo makes when you open it. I tried to make my own pipe lighter zippo by drilling through the windsheild of a zippo but don't do it! Zippos are almost bulletproof and this zippo resisted my best drill bits.
There is also the Imco lighters which are also well made but German made (hiss, boo!). Actually they are made in Austria but were popular in the German army, the first ones being made from brass cartridge casings. They're real big among pipe smokers.

I always had my zippo in my pocket when I used to smoke, the feel of that lighter is just about the only thing I miss about smoking.
It has got Prat&Whitney engraved on it and that is kinda nice since I used to work there. The best thing about zippos is that they are a bit of a cultural icon.
