If I could ever afford one I'd probably want a Borsalino. I remember coming across a small family run company one time too that made all of their fedoras to order– very custom and high quality. That would be cool.
Anyway– did you want fur felt or something like a wool felt crushable?Last edited by Philadelph; 02-03-2009 at 04:25 PM.

Thanked: 31Custom, handmade fedoras and ever other type of hat you can imagine (from all over the globe) at JW hats in Salt Lake City. They're the longest-operating hatshop in the U.S. Got a nice steel grey fedora with a 3" snap brim two weeks ago, and am placing orders for a black and a brown one this month. Well worth it, if you feel you want to contact them. They don't warehouse and they don't wholesale. You want a hat, you order it and then they make it. As an aside, here I thought I was the only one in the world that was wearing the old-fashioned stuff. How cool is it to see other guys doing the same???!!!!!

Thanked: 586This looks like the best source of quality hats I've seen since I got the black beaver fur fedora my grandfather got married in after WWI in Italy. It was a fantastic hat. When he died my grandma gave me that one and one grey felt with a black satin band. Here is the link to the Beaver Brand fedora page. They are having a sale and I am getting close to convincing Scarlett that she needs to buy me one: Beaver Brand Hats - Best Selection and Prices

I bought a (different) hat a few years ago from this old world hat store near the Yale campus. Lots of choices and there was an elderly, very knowledgeable gentleman there who helped me, especially with fitting. They also sell online: DelMonico Hatter - U.S. Hat Retailer of the Year
I'd say give them a call. I am pretty sure they will be able to help you out.

Thanked: 1+1 on Akubra and David Morgan. Great customer service, great hats.
I have the Angler and couldn't be happier. Not quite fedora, not quite western, just casual. I wear mine with anything.
Akubras will also take whatever you can throw at them, rain, snow, whatever.
Happy hunting!

Thanks for all the comments.
I would say I'm looking for a fur felt. I've got a couple of mid/high grade Stetson cowboy hats and love them, so that's kind of why I was starting from Stetson, but happy to consider anything else of equal or better quality. i of course am also attracted to the history and brand name of Stetson even though the name is all that's left of John B's company.
