I like to gently toast the outside edge of the stick before I light the cigar proper. I just got a windproof Xikar lighter (and a cutter, go K.C. MO!!), and the butane-types do burn a little hotter...so only hold the cigar as close as it takes to get it started. No need to shove it deep into the flame, in most cases.

Had a nice Opus X Fuente Fuente last night. If you use matches, use sulphate free cigar matches, lighters use butane, no Bic or Zippo fluid lighters. You will ruin the cigar, it will taste of lighter fluid or sulphate. I use a triple burner butane torch lighter.

Start your lighter held away from the stick, hold the cigar horizontal, don't angle it or you will heat one side more than the other and end up scorching the wrapper and have an ashy taste for the first few inches. Angle the lighter not the cigar. Dont touch the flame to the end, keep a little space, there is plenty of heat from the torch. Make small overlapping circles around the end of the cigar and it will slowly darken then start to get some white ash. I usually toast the end, then stop the lighter and gently blow on the end of the cigar to help the burn start, then give it another 10 or 15 seconds with the lighter to further light the end. Then after the lighter is out, give the stick 3 or 4 slow draws. That will get a nice even burn and not overheat the cigar.

Most new cigar smokers puff to fast. That will overheat the cigar and the flavor changes, it will usually get a harsh edgy taste. Having a cigar is a savory sensation, don't rush it. Slowly draw, give a moment or two between puffs. The goal is to enjoy the experience, not puff like a steam locomotive. If you want to get real fancy, if your sticks have a cedar wrap, light the wrap, then use it to light the cigar. They have a wonderful aroma.

I tried again yesterday with much better success. It's true, I've been too impatient with trying to get it lit and puffing too fast. I'll try again in the next couple days and see how I do. At this rate, I think I'll be buying some cheaper ones to practice on before heading straight for the fuente's

Actually, you can use a zippo; dont inhale; let it burn off for a few moments after lit. Not a preferred method, but wont effect or is it affect the taste.

I picked up some super cheap Fuente sticks yesterday ($1.95!!!) and went to work on lighting it. When I finally got it started, it was a very decent smoke. Nothing to write home about, but it did have good flavors. I think the two that I picked up will be my last for a while, so I better make 'em count!

After reading all this cigar talk, I had to get back into it my self, unfotunately with Cafe Cremes, but hey ho. I forgot what a smoke with taste was like!

    Enjoy.
