when i was at school people used to thread the top onto their shoelace. if you aren't familiar with grolsch tops they are a hard plastic or possibly ceramic and mushroom shaped, there is a hole through the wider section for the wire closer to fit in, this hole is where a lace was threaded.
unfortunately a few people aledgedly got their feet broken by having the grolsch top stamped on, and they were banned.
