It doesn't seem that you have done much buying on eBay. There are some protections available. Some, but admittedly not all eBay sellers do offer guarantees/return periods. Then there is always the Feedback option.
You can tell the world what a no good chisler the seller is. A reputable seller is jealous of his reputation and his Feedback. He won't do anything to jeopardise them.
By being JUDICIOUS, I have never, in over 300 transactions, been swindled, ripped off, or cheated. Therefore, I have never had to resort to leaving a seller Negative Feedback.
Life comes with NO guarantees. You aren't assured of seeing another sunrise. So you do the best you can, live an honorable life and accept the fact that there are not always 'cinches and locks' to bet on. Sometimes you just have to trust the other guy.
I am honest in my business dealings and I expect others to do likewise.

Thanked: 485Hey. Talking of reviving old threads, I bought a vintage French 1950s pocket watch the other day. Now I've found a thread (Pocket watch Friday) in a watch forum. I can see a new obsession starting...
Anyone in to pocket watches?
Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Thanked: 116I don't carry everyday, but I have 6 vintage ones in working condition and about the same amount I am currently fixing. It's a mix of German and Swiss watches so far and I have yet to pay more than a tenner each I'm currently looking for a spare pallet fork for a Junghans 38a movement.

Thanked: 485I know nothing about how they work, but I do like them. I think I'll save up for a really nice one...

I like them , but I'm too rough to keep any watch in my pocket, it would be broken in a week. A few months ago I got my great grandmother's pocket watch back from Australia, where it spent 6 months, while the repairman hunted everywhere for a part to replace a broken piece. Couldn't find the part, so now she is home & I will send her to a man in North Carolina who might replace the entire works just to get it running. I will get an estimate after February.

Rule one in pocketwatch buying-buy a brand that made a lot and was in operation a very long time. N.Y Standard was an outfit that went out of business around 1929. They made about seven million watches. it sounds like a lot but it's nothing. getting parts for something like that is near impossible. if you replace the mvmt well it's not the same watch anymore. it's a frankenwatch.

Yes,, as I have been told by the two watch masters already,,,, but I would rather have a running Frankenwatch to hand down to my granddaughter someday, than a watch that don't run.

If it is a Frankenwatch is that all bad?
In the Straight razor world it is interesting because it is not the end of the world if the scales are replaced.
