In the late '60s, early '70s many men's dress trousers still had pockets for pocket watches. On the right, just under the belt, like a pair of jeans still do today. It was much more convenient to carry one back then. For a decade I carried a Hamilton 992 made in 1932 and it was a great running watch. My wife at that time had given it to me and had 'To Jimmy from ........... and all of that, engraved on the inside of the back. I sold it after we were divorced because I didn't need the constant reminder.

I've had other 992s, an Illinois Bunn Special 60 hour, never had a Ball, always wanted one, or a Howard. I carried a couple in rotation in the 1990s and finally sold them and stuck to my Seiko automatic wrist watch. They are cool though if you're into them.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I bought 1 when I was younger. Started working in construction and put a dent in it. Wasn't long and the only thing attached to me or in my pockets was bare essentials. Now what would be cool is a pocket watch/smart phone :<0)

And that last link didn't stay up long. Somebody got themselves a Christmas present.

Ha ha ha ha old threads get me everytime. A link from 2009 pffffff

My Great Great Grandfather took his mothers name because there where so many Peters Sons in the army.

I don't think there where many pocket watches if any at that time though.....

Funny thing about this. First time last week I wore my pocket watch I wore it with jeans (pin collar shirt, vintage tie tack, English hand made leather boots). Of course I placed it into the pocket I previously deemed a coin pocket. Went to the market, bought something, got change, thought, now what?

Yeah, we men want to follow our fathers, don't we? We almost ignore our mothers' heritage sometimes...
You know, statistically, it's more logical to follow your mother's name? It's more likely your mother IS your mother, in a number of cases the person you think is your father isn't.

This was the conversation at today's afternoon tea, coincidentally.

My father is (allegedly) German, but born in Yugoslavia in a German village. His father (took off after he was born, his true identity is unknown). His mother's name is Boiso (or similar) from a place close to the German border with France Alsace). I myself was born in England; my mother is English; came here to Australia when I was two. So I get a little confused about 'what' I am...

History of names is interesting although not related to pocket watches

Most Finns got a house name/family name after the place they lived, their profession or some nature objects or animals that were common in their neighborhood. Using family names/house names goes back to medieval times and started because of the taxing/drafting purposes.

Therefore my family name, in English, is '(place of) many meadows'. The place of that name still exists, about 100 km from where i live.
Some, but not many families kept patronymes until these days. The family of my wife was one of those few. My late father-in-law was Henrik. So wifeys maiden name was simply Henriksdotter (daughter of Henrik).

And now as my daughter got her first son, the little man got a family name from his father, my wannabe-son-in-law. In English it is '(place) where leaves fall early'.

There are a number of places who sell very nice leather pouches for a pocketwatch you wear on your belt. That's what I do. if I dress up I'll wear a vest and wear the watch in a vest pocket with a vintage Edwardian silver pocketwatch chain and fob.

With very few exceptions most change pockets in modern trousers are too small for a standard pocketwatch which is 16 size or around 40mm or so. besides the moisture in a pocket like that isn't good for the watch.
