Thanked: 4Unless he's cocked, he's definitely empty!
I do love your Redhawk. I originally wanted the 5.5" model when I was looking 5plus years ago. But Rugers production of Redhawks is very spotty and I got frustrated after 3-4 months. So when I saw a NIB Super Redhawk at the medina gun show 5 years ago, I grabbed it. Took a while to get used to the aesthetics, but when looking down the sights, that's what looks the best.
My ruger 22 requires one to remove the mainspring making sure the firing pin is in the discharged position. You then slide the bolt out the back of the barrel. Once the bolt is clear, you use a nylon or rubber mallet to knock the barrel free from the grip frame. Reassembly is pretty much the reverse, but you have to make sure the hammer is not in the way and that a over on the mainspring is lined up properly. There is a metal rod on top of the mainspring that acts as the bolt stop. If that gets crooked, you've got a heck of a time removing it and trying again!
It's a great pistol (wish it were the MkII which has no mag disconnect) and is accurate because the bolt actually slides in the barrel tube. But darn, it is overly complicated. I quit fieldstripping it unless it was really filthy! And I used cleaner 22 ammo as well
