    Default Classical Music

    My dear Nathan,

From what I have heard about the traffic in Bangkok, one needs Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture to plow through. By the way, some recordings of the 1812 use real cannons for the finale.

    And my dear JimmyHAD,

Yes, that Wagner quote you have is a classic. I guess today is not Wagner's day. Here some other good ones you'll find in my book "Obie's Opus" (by Obie Yadgar, obieyadgar.com):

"I like Wagner's operas better than anyone's," said Oscar Wilde. "You can talk the whole time without anyone hearing what you're saying."

"I love Wagner, but the music I prefer is that of a cat hung up by the tail outside a window, and trying to stick to glass with its claws," said French poet Charles Baudelaire. "There is an odd grating on the glass which I find at the same time strange, irritating, and singularly harmonious."

"The typical Wagnerian soprano looks like an ox, moves like a carthorse, and sounds like a haystack," said music writer Ernest Newman.

"The opera was "Parsifal" — and I enjoyed it in spite of the singing" — Mark Twain.

    Stay well, gentlemen.

    Regards,

    Obie

    My dear Otto,

Oh, yes, the Grieg A-minor Piano Concerto is lovely. Interestingly enough, Grieg wrote it at age 25. That was to remain his biggest hit, however, and he was never able to match its popularity. Certainly he wrote other compositions, including Peer Gynt and some delightful Norwegian dances, but they were not the A-minor piano concerto.

The is often paired with the Robert Schumann A-minor Piano Concerto. I might have mentioned this piece in one of my posts. Schumann's truly glorious piano concerto is from the height of Early Romanticism. I have a recording by Chilean pianist Jorge Bolet playing the Grieg and Schumann coupling.

    Ah, that's sweet music.

    Regards,

    Obie

More modern but very nice when you have some quiet time. I caught this on radio driving across East Texas alone one night. The music style made an impression on me so I looked it up later.

Arvo Pärt (Paert/Part) - Te Deum / Berliner Messe (Alleluia, Sanctus, Gloria)

In the past year and a half I have really dove into classical music. The only radio station I will listen to is Classical South Florida 89.7 which is great. I also go to Classic Cat (Classic Cat - the free classical music mp3 and video directory) for all my classical researching and free downloading needs. My favorite composer has to be Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

I also make music and use classical samples a lot for my beats. Here's a video of my most recent piece:

YouTube - *RIBBS - "Eat first" (William Burroughs, "Salt Chunk Mary" with Bach)
