plus one to what Jimmy said about the cheap briar. Those things might be the worst ever. I thoght I'd try a small pipe for easy hands free smoking. It costs 15 bucks.

Tastes like lacquer. tried charring the inside, no good. Just awful.

I agree that cheap drug store pipes taste awful, burn hot, and can quickly turn someone off from enjoyment of pipe smoking. Here is a great alternative that is pretty reasonable in price and smokes real well.

I have several of these and they are among my best smokers, I even like them better than some of my Peterson's.

The best things about them is that they get darker in color as you smoke them, for the price you can get several so that you can dedicate them to specific blends without a lot of overhead, and you get the feel and smoke of a good mid range pipe.

At sixteen I'd recommend not starting. Both my parents died of lung cancer brought on by smoking. Watching them gasping for breath, when the extra oxygen stopped working, would definitely make anyone stop and think. I'd say for my father especially, it robbed him of about 20yrs of active life. Wait 'til you've got a bit more mature then decide. At sixteen there is a tendency to think you are immortal.

Absolutely no disrrespect intended here, but pipe smoking is considerably different from cigarette smoking. Obviously, you don't inhale, but more than that, the tobaccos you smoke are minimally processed, unlike cigarette tobacco, that is treated with a stew of things to increase an addictive response. The 2 aren't at all comparable, in my opinion.

+1, PA23 is correct. Cigarettes, pipes and cigars are all burning tobacco and that is about where the similarity ends. It is so important to note that cigar and pipe smokers almost never become addicted. Case in point, when the tobacco taxes went into effect, cigar smokers just stopped smoking. They can. They are not addicted. This left the cigar companies in serious hurt.

Cigarettes on the other hand are very processed and are smoked to full inhalation. It becomes a nervous habbit. I have not and would not ever smoke a cigarette. I have walked away from my pipes for 2 or three weeks from haveing smoked them once or twice a day. No problems. I feel like it is always at my discretion to continue pipe smoking or not.

Having said all of that, it is still smoking. I am still bringing smoke into my mouth. I have accepted the fact that I am exposing myself to possible health risks. The same as eating some crappy food at McDonlads. But pipe smokers enjoy something that non-smokers and cigarette smokers do not. Less stress! A lot less stress. What is the #1 killer - stress!

I smoked pipes and cigarettes for many years (43 to be exact). Also was a long time contributor on alt.smokers.pipes on usenet. I've quit now. Cigarettes are the worst. They're nothing but a nicotine delivery system. Very addictive. My father and mother-in-law died from smoking. Very nasty way to go. I truly enjoyed my pipes but unfortunately they're not safe either. All kinds of cancers of the mouth, lips, tongue, throat, etc. No offense to anyone and I don't want to sound like one of those dog gone self righteous ex-smokers but just don't start down that slippery slop if you can help it.

I usually only smoked English and Irish tobac's and belived in good pipes. I primarily stayed with Petersons and Savinellis. Still have about 2 dozen high end models. If you buy cheap you get cheap. You always get what you pay for. The comparison to Zeepk vs. Dovo is a good one. I will say however that I really did like Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipes (great for out in the shop or working outside).

My advice to new pipe smokers is the same as most peoples, a QUALITY PIPE and TOBACCO. Sit back and enjoy.
The three things that have given me some of the most memorable times in my life, motorcycles, pipe smoking and travelling to strange out of the way places are the three things when I was a teenager people told me not to do,all way to dangerous. But when all three are combined the day is one of perfection!
