They were fairly common in the UK. We had one as a wedding present in the '70s. Nowdays we use a cafetiere and a small espresso machine.

It sometimes amuses me when folk ask if they have modern conveniences outside of the U.S. When my brother-in-law emigrated to Canada in the early sixties people there asked him if they had things like indoor plumbing and television. He got tired of pointing out that many commonplace items were invented or developed in Britain. It was a Scotsman that made the first television. The world's first aircraft jet engine was run only 25 miles from where I sit typing this.

I remember going to New York in 1996 and a waitress in a diner excitedly asking me " Hey, you ever tried coffee? ". Bless her, she though she was introducing me to some exotic new drink.

I did receive my Yama vacuum brewer this morning. It was extremely well packaged. It came with a replaceable cloth filter but I have a Cory glass rod coming to be used instead. In the meantime I first washed everything and went about to using it. What a difference compared to my Mellitta pour over I've been using lately. Coffee had more taste, bolder tasting and just more taste overall. No sediments at all and perfectly warm. Cleaning was a snap. One just has to make sure not to hit any of the glass parts against the sink. I also scored on a vintage C20 Sunbeam electrical vacuum coffeemaster which should hopefully arrive soon.
