When they are translucent I add a can of sweet peas, water and all until heat through. Meanwhile I am cooking the shells. When cooked to my liking I fill a bowl with the shells, add some grated Parmigianno cheese and top with the peas and liquid. Salt and pepper to taste. Yum!
Oh yea - ate a lot of that growing up

Hey-- I can find anchovies in jars at my local (non-specialty) grocer. They don't look like Brad's latch-top jar. Maybe a 3-4 ounce jar with the anchovies sitting in oil.

They're usually in with the capers and olives.

    Icedog,

Thank you for the wonderful recipe and the pics that really made me hungry. Anchovies are not usually on my top list, but i surely will make an exception here. Jarred anchovies might be a bit hard to find here, but i think the local fish market hall will help me with those.

I have spent alot of time in the midwest and grocery shopping is strangely hit or miss. I was in Norwalk, Ohio where the supermarket didn't even have Italian tomatoes but not far away in Windsor Ontario the stores had everything I could want. If you want the anchovies shoot me a PM and I can hook you up.

I got one super cheap and super GOOD.

Mangu or Mofongo with bistec de Jamon..

    Bistec de Jamon

Just take a ham steak and brown it no real seasoning needed. Use this pan to saute the onions and garlic in the next step.

    Mangu or Mofongo

Green plantains boiled like you would cook mashed potatos.

*Saute onions and garlic (previously soaked in cider vinegar) in regular oil (canola) add some salt. Use a sufficient amount of oil to mix with the plantains and get moist. Mash the plantains and mix it all together. You just made Mangu to make Mofongo (my favorite) just add crispy crumbles of bacon (we are substituting bacon for chicharrones which are basicaly pork rinds) mix it all in.

It is simple really good and literally you can feed your family for about $1-$2 a person.

*be ready for some splashing of the hot oil when the vinegar hits it.

My garlic and oil pasta typically comes with ground beef as a meat. I usually use elbows when I include beef, and it is best eaten out of a bowl with a spoon. My ex used to call it "garlicy beef noodles," and she couldn't get enough of it.

A while ago I used to make something that my brother nicknamed "Mo-unit mush" - yes, Mo-Unit was a nickname for me. Long story. Anyway, it's two to three (before cooking) cups of rice, two to three cans of beans (whatever kind you like), a can of peas, and half a jar of tomato sauce. Sounds really odd, but it tastes really good and is very filling.

Currently, my staple meals are ziti/peas/tomato sauce, rice & beans, rice with ground beef and baked beans, and steamed veggies over rice. Oatmeal with sugar and cinnimon or leftover dinner serves as breakfast/lunch. I spend maybe $20 every two weeks on food.

That looks awesome, and I think I might make it minus the anchovies, I just dun like em lol.

I love peasant food, coming from Scotland and having a chef for a mummy, we always had good filling scottish food made with whatever she found in the kitchen at dinner time lol, thankfully she taught me how to cook the same way, and I also learnt the style, a dash of this a glug of that and a bit of something else.

    Thumbs up

    Dammit.
Are you a sadist Brad? I think that you just like making out stomachs growl.
    Really love the pepper mill.
I love pepper, especially white pepper, black or red will do, especially very finely ground, definitely freshly ground.
I think that you should start a cooking/food forum.

    Grazie molte!

    Icedog, Love it!

What about panchetta instead of regular bacon, or did you mention this? Sorry if I missed it.

    I'm going to try it.

    Cheers
    David
