Sure it sounds weird, but during my time in Siam, when I quit smelling like McDonald's and more like fish sauce, fitting into the local culture was a lot easier. You can have my piece of Durian and welcome to it.
Thanks.... it turns out I like Durian. I know better than to
bring it into a house. Far corner (& down wind) of a picnic works.
For a couple weeks each year the local market gets some
and my Burmese friends thought they would get me with it.

Like some cheese the "smell" is "off" but it is amazing
when ripe. It is also spiky and ugly....

I see what you did there.

More fan art of the new internet hero and a follow up interview. It has it all, righteousness, sad parts and even a go 'merica! moment.

My description of the smell includes the following letters: "sh*t". And, I confess that I have been hungry enough to eat Durian and surprised entirely that the taste does not match the smell.

I have a fond memory of asking why the hotels all had signs up about not eating Durian inside the hotel. The Major Domo where I was staying took that to mean I wanted some and helped me find a stall on the street selling some. Then he waited for my reaction to the exposure. I never failed to get a big smile out of him every time I saw him later. He never failed to make sure I was exposed to more and more of the local diet. I'd like to think we were both better for that.

I prefer the mankut when it's in season.

I will have to watch for mankut thanks for the tip. The local
community here imports an astounding variety of fruit. I
think I have seen it but did not know what it was....
