Default The Way of the Bean

    Coffee. Its whats for dinner!

Or so many other times of the day. Some see coffee as a meal unto itself.

I have a penchant for over sweetening my coffee, but I still have a preference for a medium roast, nutty flavor, with only a 3.5 minute stand before hitting the plunger on the french press. Grind my own beans.

As a second, I have my favorite old standby, the Corningware Percolator.

Mr. Coffee, is convenient, but I just dont think it makes as good a cup.

How do you guys take yours? One lump? or Two?

I use a Keurig so the same machine does my coffee, tea and hot chocolates for my daughter. I prefer the extra bold blends with nothing in them. If it is a good grind there is no need to mess with it.

    Likewise!

    As for the strength:

    The Horseshoe Test

Lower a horseshoe vertically into a large mug of freshly brewed coffee and observe results.

    • Horseshoe plummets to the bottom and flops over: Coffee is too weak.

    • Horseshoe sinks gradually into coffee and stands upright: Coffee is strong enough.

    • Horseshoe cannot be driven into coffee, or is violently ejected and flies twelve feet into the air, or dissolves in three seconds or less: Coffee may be too strong for some tastes; drinkers should be prepared to add a few drops of hot water.

I prefer my coffee with a nice rich dark color. I prefer Community Medium Roast or Starbuck's Pike Place Roast. I use a press as well but I had one of those "indestructible" plastic types but it came apart on the inside. This is the second one of this brand.

I ordered a stainless steel press last week.

The first lasted a pretty good while and under some harsh conditions. It was all my team had for coffee when we first went into Iraq in '03. We heated the water up on a whisperlite stove. It eventually came apart though.

I finally broke down last year and bought a commercial coffee maker(the kind that keeps a pot of water hot in back all the time). Easily three times the price of the cheaper household coffee maker but should last 20 years. Prior to that we'd used a french press until the kids got old enough for SWMBO to go back to work. Then it just became too much hassle. I'd shamelessly put anything through it; Nabob, Maxwell house, whatever was cheap. If I could I'd splurge on good beans; one of my favorite treats. Now I've just settled down with Melita whole beans ground fresh done in my comercial Bunn. Certainly there are better beans, but at the volume we go through 'em, it's just too darn expensive to use the best.
The common theme: I like it strong, sweet and creamy, (doubledouble in Canadian)

It depends on coffee's varietal traits. If it tends to be a strong natural bitterness i use some cream and sweetener, Milk or dark chocolate traits, maybe cream and sweetner, nutty traits usually straight , but then there's the mix and match. basically it goes back to the first sentence.

I won't be buying anything higher than wal mart or target lol. We go through a pound of coffee every other day. We easily put away 3 drip coffee makers every day. If my father in law comes over, all bets are off.
