Hey guys, another pipe question as opposed to a pipe of the day...
I've been thinking I'd like to aquire a meerschaum estate pipe. I'm not after fancy shapes, more a simple English bulldog type if possible. I can't spend a fortune and I'm in no rush so I can wait and watch and bid when a bargain comes along.
My question is do I need a meerschaum pipe? Do they have any benefits to other pipes apart from looking so cool with the (dis)colouration when used over the years? I've broken in briars and pear and tried corn cobs but never owned a meerschaum. Suddenly I have this desire to try one for some reason! Can anyone talk me out of this or sell me the dream?
Those are some lovely pipes by unique briar above, yet more temptation especially at those prices but I'll hold off for a meerschaum I reckon!

Some say that tobacco tastes a bit different from meer but i have not noticed such changes. Instead i've found that the smoke is drier (or then its just my imagination).
If the previous owner has smoked a lot of some weird tastes from his meer, then it is probably mission impossible to get rid of all ghosts. At least it is worth inspecting before making decisions.
If you want to try clean tastes then you should try clay pipes. Cheap and handy. A box of 10 comes with 10-12 € (actually there's 12 or 13 in a box where should be ten. Damn. Have i become cheated again? ).

Thanks for the advice. I did wonder what they were like for ghosting. I can see what you're saying about clay pipes being a clean smoke, I've tried them in the past but don't find them as satisfying to take out and use over a weekend in the woods for some reason, mainly aesthetic reasons and they feel too light and fragile to me. Just my opinion of course, I know the rough and tumble history behind them and some people's preference to use them for a truer flavour.
Perhaps I should look for an unused meerschaum pipe as opposed to the Victorian estate meers that look so appealing to me. If I see the right one for the right price I'll take a punt on it, if it's haunted with bad flavours lesson learned and a new one will be on my list. As I said I'm in no rush so I won't jump into anything just yet. Thanks for the words of wisdom Sailor!

As far as i've learned there are several meer carvers with a good reputation at this side of the bond and few places where you can be sure to get a meer pipes of good quality. Prices are pretty high, they go from 100 € and up, but every now and then you can make a catch from special sales.
I have two Strambachs, one came straight from the Strambach workshop and the other was from some last minute sales, relatively cheap.
Vauen, Altinok and Pfeifenkonsulat have some nice new meer pipes, and of course there are several sellers more out there.
If you are after vintage, then you can also make some real findings if you do not have a hurry or urgent need to own one. Every now and then vintage meers pop up in various web auctions (specially those non-english/same goes with razors and almost anything), and with a little luck you'll be the only bidder.
Back in my home country you can usually find vintage stuff of excellent quality from estate auctions and even flea markets every now and then (actually that is what wifey likes to do, i'm rather just a hangaround, like it or not).
And at least from the Scandinavian pipe sites there are excellent buy/sell threads (luckily i have no need for another pipe )Last edited by Sailor; 09-07-2012 at 04:48 PM.

'EGG' lol. Now as you said, i cannot help but think about Alien, the movie
But seriously that is one of the great smoker. If about to smoke whole bowl at once it'll take more than hour.
Very beautiful work that is.
I know the feeling very well.Last edited by Sailor; 09-08-2012 at 04:13 PM.
