Pipe of the Day

So I have to ask for a recommendation, I have been smoking a pipe since I turned 18 but I have mostly been smoking gas station type blends. Im looking to sample a few other things but with the dizzying array of tobacco bleds out there I dont even know where to begin. I suppose I would begin with the fact that my other preferences are for peaty whiskys and strong black coffee. maybe something bass note heavy with some spice? Any recommendations you can give for a good place to start this journey would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to play, all you need is an instrument, time, some online lesson and a big will to do it, that is one of the most difficult things to find, especially as an adult... I thank the Gods I was 14 when I've got that idea on my mind...

I wish I could play violin , I especially love Gypsy violin and middle eatern style. Got a neighbor of 20 years from iran who plays beautifully.Though he's getting old and arthritic now unfortunately.

You better open a shop front soon Phil. Those cobs will be walking out your door either with the aid of buyers or just because you'll be swimming in them before too long.

You should probably get few samples of different tobacco types: pure virginia, orientals/latakia mixtures and aromatics. That is how you learn to know the difference between these main styles. Of course everyone is a world of it's own with a lot of variation.
I'm all for pure Va's and orientals but to keep my wife happy, i smoke orientals only outdoors and even in my cave i better smoke va's aromatics only.

No sacrifice is enough to keep the 1st lady happy and also i do not want her to take my pipe and use it as a warhammer into my head.

Some of my favorites:
Va's: Capstan blue, SG Full Virginia or Best Brown Flake.
Orientals/Latakia: SG Squadron Leader or Balkan Flakes, Peterson Old Dublin, Chonowitz T17
Aromatics: Erinmore Flakes, Peterson Univeristy Flake, McBaren Navy Flake (although some think these are not aromatics at all). Real candy aromatics maybe Blue Note or Larsen's Signature is ok.

Sailor, you named the best! Especially, I love the SG's Squadron Leader...

But you mainly wrote about ingredients, while I learnt how to chose a tobacco in a different way, and since it might be useful to somebody else I want to share it with you. Maybe it's an "Italian" way to deal with such a choice, but this is how I learnt the matter from Italian texts:

- There are different qualities of tobaccos, and they depend mainly on their country of origin and on the treatment that the leaves receive.
- Historically, a number of traditions grew in different places, regarding the way to blend the various qualities of tobacco.
- But first of all you have to distinguish between:
* Aromatics: they have some chemically added aroma (liquors, fruits, and so on)
* Naturally aromatics: the blend is so tasty that it reminds you of some natural aroma, but it has not been chemically added
* Naturals: no added aroma, but the blend is so fine that it has gain a market
- These 3 categories may be found almost in every tradition. Now, according to the place of origin of the blend, you can find:
* Irish tobaccos: quite neutral in taste, the most similar to cigarette tobacco of all
* Danish tobaccos: quite sweet, they usually have a light room smell
* English tobaccos: Very tasty and medium/strong, more similar to cigar tobaccos
* German tobaccos: quite neutral but stronger than the Irish ones, and more prone to be well aromatized
- Italian tobaccos: quite rough in taste, but with a good room smell
- Lastly, you can divide them according to their taste strength: light, medium and full, with all the graduations in between (they say there are 7 different grades, in all).

Of course, the world is full of exceptions, this is just a generic list...

If you check the web you can find websites that describe almost every brand and mark, so you can figure out what you like more. My suggestion is that you try one tobacco for each class, so you can refine your taste. Try this to start:

Also, there is another point: each pipe has its own specific taste, so one can be good with a certain tobacco, and the other can be bad with it... It's a wonderful never ending game :)
