On a serious note, few of the best vehicles i've been offroad were Russian gigantic Graz or Uaz. They go far behind when driver has already lost his faith. You do not need to be sorry for scratches. They just go and not much care about what you put in the tank. And Uaz seems to be such a miracle: you can't break it too bad to fix it on site and drive back home safely.
Off course they were such a nightmare on decent roads. Modern western 4WD's are nice and smooth, but i wouldn't go with them in places where Uaz still kepps happily going. Nowadays they are not in service any more. I still do drive at work on rare occasions. Land Rover defenders are a big joke (imho) and Humvees have way too wide axle widht to be suitable on our terrain. Nowadays our forces use RG32M.
But you are right, of course. Nowadays i couldn't follow you as i have no 4WD (and not sure about my skill any more either).
