Tonight, some nice Dunbar in my nording, while relaxing in my man cave. Wife is upstairs watching Dancing with the Stars, while I reconnect with my Y chromosome down here.

I have to say that the Ashtons was my most enjoyable smoke so far. I think it was a combination of the pipe and the Bac.

Maybe someone can answer this for me, but this new Stanwell smoked cool and smooth right out of the box. I notice that my Nordings smoke pretty hot and I have to be careful. I thought that it was the fact that they were new pipes and my smoking technique, but I don't think that is it. Last night my Stanwell smoked nice and cool and I really got all of the flavor out of the tobacco.

Is this a result of the shape of the pipe, the quality of the pipe or some other factor?

I think it is depending of some factors.
A rustified pipe with his surface structure you can smoke mostly "cooler".
Also the thickness of the bowl is an important factor... and
also the experience in pipe-smoking is important.
A lot of pipes are made by briar-wood and it is only a question of esthetics and money, if you use a machine-produced or handmade one.

I don't know that it is so much a quality issue as it may just be a break in issue. My Jirsa smoked great from the start where as my Nordings are improving with each smoke. Another thought here might be moisture, for example my STM is very moist and I have to let it dry a little to get a good smoke out of it regardless of the pipe. The Ashton on the other hand is just right out of the tin. A little test you might try is to take a pinch of tobacco in you fingers, hold it for a few seconds and let it go. It should just unravel a little bit. Too moist and it wil not move, too dry and it will just fall apart. Just a thought.....

I noticed that the Ashtons felt "just right" out of the tin as far as the moisture level is concerned. Prior to smoking, I have been putting my tobacco under a small heater for approximately 3 - 5 minutes and it seems to help with the moisture.
