I really did not want to post a question like this here, but I figured I wanted to get opinions. I know there are hundreds of opinions on how to pack a pipe, but I was wondering if anyone just threw the tobacco in loose (gravity fill basically) and lit up. I have found, in my very limited experience that all these different "methods" complicate things. I am still a novice, but I have found that my most enjoyable smokes have been the quick and loose packs I have done without thinking. Basically filling the bowl, tapping the sides, topping off and gently packing down. No three step, no Frank method, no air pocket.....
Anyone else find this works for them?
If this is too "off topic" for POTD, just PM me.

That is what works the best for me... I was talking with a friend and we both came to the idea that he had been packing to tight...
Tobacco needs air to brurn... This method works extreamly well in a cob... Stuff it, light it & smoke it...
Also Pigtail, plug, or the coin cuts need LOTS of air...

I really do like that Vauen pipe of yours Tom, thats a great looking piece!
In terms of packing a pipe, what I do with mine is fill it loosely then pack it down halfway. Then I fill it to the top again and pack it down, then fill it to the top and pack it down for the last time. That works pretty well for me..!

Thanks!
Filling a pipe... it is no science. After years of pipe-smoking you don't think about the procedure. You have the right one feeling in your fingers.
I put the tobacco with my fingers into the bowl (1/2) and pack it with the finger. Then I put again tobacco into the bowl and at least I'll take a stodger.
No problems.
