OK, Smokers of the Pipes!!!
What be your thoughts on Meerschaum pipes? I really like the looks of them, the one about six posts back kinda got me lookin' into them. Anyway, how do they smoke? Any traits to look for, or to avoid? I like that they take on more colour/character as they are used. I read that it's the nicotine that it catches which does that, so using one does it take the vitamin N away from you? JK
Anyway, thanks in advance, donv

Be careful with a Meerschaum. You can destroy it because the material is very sensitive.
You can smoke more than one pipe a day - a Meerschaum need no drying-out.
The Meer gets its character after some month' because the "N" and heat gives her some color.Last edited by eTom; 12-19-2012 at 08:26 AM.

Thanked: 1160I had toyed with the Meerschaum idea a couple of times, but I'm not ready yet. They sure are pretty works. I am curious though. How do you keep the cake down to proper. They gotta be tricky as heck I would imagine trying to use a reamer on them..if one is used ?

I use a wooden reamer for my Meerschaum-pipes.

Thanked: 1160Ah....is that what a tobbaconist would use as well ? Is that tradtional ?? Do you ream your own briars E-Tom ?

Yes, I ream my briars too, but I use a metal-reamer for such "operations".
It is not often needful. A good old pipe needs some coke/ coal inside than it works good.
Every pipe needs some care. I use bee-wax for my briars and polish the pipes by hand...as you can see in the pictures.Last edited by eTom; 12-19-2012 at 08:43 AM.

I don't know much about pipes but I too fell under the spell of meerschaum after an English Bulldog with a silver band and fossilised amber stem hallmarked 1900 caught my gaze. Best £6 I ever spent! As long as there are no cracks and the price makes you happy I'd say go for it!
