I love those old LB's! I know they have been somewhat hard to find for many years because of the continued popularity and they do sell fast. I have a Root and a blast. Yours sure has a nice grain

Thanks! I have another LB in the Shell finish. It's a good smoker, just not as good as the Tanshell. I've gotten interested in "Patent Era" Dunhills of late, and picked up a 1928 Shell shape 137 (Dublin). It's a fantastic smoke!

I can promise you this the older patent Dunhills are the best smokers by far. That's when Dunhill still made the pipes themselves and used the very best briar. The blast on the old ones are beautiful and they are the very best smokers and a great investment. At that time Dunhill used a different type of briar for each finish.
It's a shame that Dunhill has sunk to farming out to other companies to make the bowls for them. All Dunhill does these days is make the stem, finish them and that's it. Les Wood of Ferndown has made the silver for Dunhill since he left them and started his own lines.

You're exactly right, Gunner. Dunhill has fallen to the quest for profit just like every other company. Les Wood makes a heck of a pipe in his own right.

I don't know if you know Les's background but he worked for Dunhill for 20 years. After he left a couple of backers convinced him to start his own brand. His first one on his own were all root type briar. That company only lasted a few years before Les became unsatisfied with the arrangement and started what we know now as LJS Ferndown.
Dunhill couldn't find anyone who could do silver work, especially spigots, that they liked so they contracted with Les to do all of Dunhills silver which he still does.
