Thanked: 102Steyr SA1
This previous weekend I had an opportunity to put a Steyr SA1 pistol thru its paces.
There are a multitude of manufacturer's out there building firearms that when you pull the trigger it sends a bullit down the barrel. Some are better than others. This one is better.
This is a striker fired pistol with polymer frame, comes in 9MM and 40 S&W and you can get the MA1 with 4 inch barrel and the SA1 with 3 1/2 inch barrel and shorter grip.
This pistol made in Austria was designed by some of the same people who designed the Glock. I carried a Glock Model 23 in .40 cal. for about five years as an issue weapon. The Steyr is what the Glock should have been.
The trigger, sights and grip on this pistol are fantastic.
Check out www.steyrarms.com - when you get to the site click on the news about Steyr importing the pistol under the news column.
The SA1 is about 6 1/2 inches long, slightly over an inch wide and about 4 3/4 inches high. It would conceal well. Galco and DeSantis have holsters and magazine pouches for this pistol.
For the last decade if it was not a .45 1911 or a Springfield XD or a small Smith & Wesson J frame for pocket carry I was not interested. This pistol has changed my mind. I intend to purchase one.
It has a mag capacity of ten rounds in the compact model and more in the larger size.
If you find yourself in harm's way - you could do a lot worse than this pistol.

I too, like the .45. I got a stainless Kimber CDPII a couple of weeks ago, so my Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry wouldn't be lonely. I never liked the Glocks. They were our issue weapon transitioning from the Ruger P89. The Rugers are ugly, but they worked good. After I retired, the department went to the .40 from 9mm Glocks. They were having problems with the slides flying right off the frames and problems with the triggers flaking if you used stuff like Break-Free on them.

will have to try one
I have and probably always will be a 1911 guy. The only DA semi-auto I own that I feel has a good trigger is my SIG P229 Equinox. Have yet to shoot a Glock that I enjoyed. My CC pistol is a Springfield Armory EMP that I have had customized a little. This pistol is so easy to conceal and even though the barrel is only 3 inches long it's very accurate and completely reliable.
Ive fired several Styer rifles and all have been very well put together. When I get home I am sure to buy a few more guns. Will have to give the new Styer pistol a try.

My son-in-law was in Iraq with the 173rd and he likes the 1911 too. He said that the Berettas were a piece of sh!t with all the sand and stuff causing malfunctions. Reminded me of Nam with the malfunctioning M16's. My T/O weapon was the M-14. You could drag that thing through the mud, the blood, the guts, and the beer and it would still function. Thank you for your service. You keep your wits about you and stay safe out there!

M14
Thanks, I will definitely stay safe.. We still have a few M14s over here these days. I think today's soldier would have a hard time with the weight. Everyone is so used to the M4 and it's small size. Mine has a 10.5 inch barrel and is tiny next to an M14. I would love to see something more powerful than the 5.56 though. We have to shoot wild dogs from time to time when they venture onto our camp. It often takes more than 1 5.56 round to do it, and that is on a 60 pound dog...
The M9 is junk. Not much more to say. I had a 1911 for the first year I was in back in 1989. Would love to have that pistol today..

Soon
Be headed back in less than 2 months. This is my 4th Iraq deployment not counting a very brief portion of the tail end of Desert Storm... I am over 20 years now and really need to figure out what is next.
Can't play Army forever and it seems like I have been doing just that since I was a kid.

Matt:
Hope by now you are enroute back to the "World" - that's an old guy military saying.
Thank you for your service and the sacrifice your family makes when you are away from them.
