My first batch was a 5 gallon, and I still remember gagging and retching, with noxious fumes in my eyes as I dumped it in the bushes in my back yard.

If I quit a hobby simply because the first attempt turned out poorly and possibly placed my life in jeopardy, I wouldn't be posting this on a straight razor forum.

Update:
Well it's been amost two years since my first batch... I have yet to still try it... I seem to have given it all away but two jars...
I'm waiting to hear what "The Phill" in Oklahoma has to say about his jar... He's had it for a week... Maybe he's "a Scared"...Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated...

That's how I started Mead. I will say one thing. Watch those jugs... There is a distinct possibility that a seam in the plastic might give way to a mead flood.

Warmer - you might want to hook up w/ deanfarris. He graciously gave a bottle of his efforts and it was excellent. He also made some barley wine, which is really very interesting - in a good way. 'Complex flavor that literally changes (noticeably) as it goes from refridgerated temps to room temp.
