In some areas, finding a store with a good scotch collection can be tricky. Try to hit the high end/fancy or really big liquor shops first.

Once you get into the $50 range, none of it is bad. They are just all different. Without knowing ahead of time what kind of a Scotch you'll most enjoy, it's impossible to recommend something. At this point, I pretty much grab a random bottle based on what I feel like spending on that given trip. The worst case scenario is that on the first sip, it's not exactly what I wanted, but by the time the first glass is done I'm acclimated and can enjoy the whole bottle for what it is. (A lot like vintage razors... actually)
Stellar finding! I agree its the only way to go.
I remember the first sip of the Laphroaig was shock as it was quite different.
But as you said, one you get acclimated its awesome.

check this guy out. Ralfy goes through a whole lot of spirits, mostly all kinds of scotch but he also does whiskey, bourbon, rye, rum, and I think maybe a tequila. In addition to tips on drinking, tasting, nosing, and glassware. In all he has almost 200 reviews. Good luck. YouTube - ralfystuff's Channel
