My half-Irish, half-Scottish MIL made some awesome potato soup today! Does that count?

Just got done with a regal dinner of corned beef with cabbage and potatoes in the lovely company of my MIL, who provided the recipe, and my better half, who did the cooking.
I'm settling with a Lucky Strike and an Anchor Extra IPA.
Best part of St. Valentine's day is to hear my MIL, an octogenarian born in Italy, say with a heavy Italian accent "A-Once a year I ama Irishe!" as we break bread, and tell the story how she got the recipe from Ellen Gillmartin, who got it from her great grandmother (it goes on for another 15 minutes, and gets better every year). It warms the c0ckles of your heart.
Gentlemen, life is indeed very good! May it go on forever!Last edited by Snake; 03-18-2011 at 01:19 AM. Reason: ****les does not sounds as good as c o c k l e s. IMHO.

Got on to post a quick Q and saw this. I'm feeling out of sorts today...none of my usual St. Patrick's day fare. :'(
Usually do bacon and cabbage with creamed potato soup, tradition stems from me mother's side of the family--Flemings and Brady's they are. Corned beef was the Irish-American tradition because bacon was too expensive for us poor Mic's once we got across the pond.
Don't over boil the cabbage and it'll keep some crunch. Put the cabbage/bacon water in to the potato soup and the bacon adds a nice flavor. I add some cheese to the soup and it's like having baked potato soup!
Man...why didn't we do that this year? Oh yeah...moving will do that to you.
I didn't even get a shamrock shake from Mc Doogle's...what a shame.

I've been eating soda bread all day and of course, several healthy servings of Guinness! We did the corned beef thing on Sunday when my son was over, even though it's not an authentic Irish meal.
