1Q is a great aro and so is RLP-6. Another (IMHO) is C&D's Autumn Evening. It's like smoking pancakes! I don't do aro's often, but when I do it's one of these three.

If you can find it, get some G. L. Pease "Odyssey." I like it alot.

It contains Latakia and red Virginia--a nice bold and assertive, yet very smokable blend.

If you don't find that suitable to your taste, try the G. L. Pease "Barbary Coast." It's milder.

As others have said "COB" or if you are looking for an inexpensive briar... Go with a Dr. Grabow... $25.00 or less...

Also, as the others have also said, Lane 1Q or Capt. Black in the white pouch... That is still at the top of my list...

    ENJOY!

Default Pipe & Tobacco Help Needed

    Hello, good sirs!

Are there any quality pipes you guys can recommend for my first? Open to all suggestions. Budget is flexible.
Any essential tobaccos I need to try? I'm open to all flavors.
Anything I need to know before making a purchase?
Any recommendations on the other essential accessories (I'm also looking for a good pouch to hold a pipe and tobacco on the go)?
My local cigar club didn't have much to offer in either department, so I may have to buy online.
I have smoked a pipe several times and love it. Please let me know your thoughts!

    Thanks!

    Max

First of all welcome to the rabbit hole. I always suggest to new pipe smokers getting a couple of cobs. They smoke great and can really take a beating without breaking down. If you insist on a briar I suggest a savenelli, Viking,or Peterson. They're all very good pipes and can be purchased without breaking the bank. Stay away from most drug store briars, they tend to be horrid.

As for tobacco it depends a lot on your tastes and smoking experience. If you have a sweet tooth you cannot go wrong with Sam Gawith's chocolate flake, navy flake, or Peterson university flake. For a nuttier sweetness I suggest carter hall or Prince Albert. If you like cigars or a touch or spice I suggest either Cornell & Diehl old joe kranz or Mississippi mud. For a smokey almost peaty ness I vote frog Morton or Esoterica Pembroke. All if the ones I've mentioned are personal favorites. Feel free to join in the pipe of the day thread and welcome to the brotherhood of the briar.

I also recommend cobs for beginning pipe smokers. Cheap and good smokes really. If you decide it is not for you after all you won't have a huge investment. Here is the official website if you want to see all the styles available. My personal favorite tobaccos are GL Pease Robusto, Blackpoint, Haddos Delight. Gawith & Hoggarth Rum Flake, Dunhill 965. There are many great tobaccos out there nowadays. I had to learn to smoke a pipe and books like Richard Hacker's Ultimate Pipe Book and Weber's Guide to Pipe Smoking (IIRC) were great helps.

Default The best of the rest.

I started smoking pipe about a year ago now and have been loving it. I was in my local BandM and happened to mention I had about .5-1 bowl of about 10 different flavors left. I was then told all about the best of the rest, Which is apparently mixing all of your remains together, letting it age together for a bit then smoking it. Now i left before asking a few key questions (and I spent enough money before i left to wanna justify a trip back) so I'm going to ask them here! Has anyone done this? Does it matter what flavors you mix? What styles mix good together? Does it have to be a larger quantity or is a bowl/crumbs ok? Is this just poor mans smoke trying to get every dollar out of your smoke!
