Thread: Looking for a new rifle

There's a loophole that allows me to possess a handgun but to own it requires special circumstance most of the time at 19 (such as inheritance). I like to play around with iron sights and with bolt actions (I learned with a .22of the such), .223 is cheap to shoot and it gives me option Of puting glass on it later. With irons I can usually get roughly 1" groups at 100 yards. Oh and I hit the 40 year nose dive my freshman year of high school, one eye's -3.5 and the others -4.7. I was able to put this on the backburner after I found a bunch of 7.62x54r for real cheap and school got real expensive. Thanks for the help guys
No that pistol isn't the only thing under my kilt, but I can tell you both of them work just fine

Thanked: 3You might also consider a .243 caliber rifle. It will take down anything short of an elk, and shoots almost as flat as a .223. I inherited my uncle's lever action saddle rifle that is a sweety to shoot, and comes with iron sights. Just a suggestion.

OP, what did you end up with?
I was going to suggest a Savage 12BJTV bolt gun in .223 but seeing your post is 6 months back you probably bought something already.
Did you?

I did not. I've since gotten to school and have been unable to find a job so money is very tight. Instead I managed to find some 7.62x54r for my 1944 Russian Mosin Nagant M44 at about a quarter of the normal price, so I've been doing a lot more playing with it. As for savages I'm leery of buying them for the fact most gunsmiths either wont or dont work on them, at least around here. While I love centerfire shooting, I've been doing a lot more with a Target .22 for an upcoming competition.

Thanked: 1Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend a mini-14. The one I had was the worst shooter I've ever had. Pay attention to the serial number on the Ruger; if
it begins with 183 I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. My favorite rifle is a Soviet made SKS. Most accurate rifle I have ever fired.

Thanked: 1936I hear that the new mini's are supposed to be actual shooters that would justify optics...just haven't laid hands on one & shot it to actually agree. My suggestion would have been an old rifle like a lever action or old bolt gun. As far as a new rifle with iron sights, my suggestion would be a Savage. They are about the best bang for the buck out there when you consider accuracy & price...they may not be pretty, but they shoot well.

Thanked: 884I had 5 Mini's over a two or three year period back in the 80's. They were fun, reliable, and wonderfully inconsistent as far as accuracy.
I have no desire to own another one.

You sound like me 35 years ago-20/20 vision and could knock a fly off a horses ass,HOWEVER, time marches on and at 56 I still have 20/20,but its gotten older and though I prefer showing off with iron sights (its what I do best) its getting harder as time goes by. My last great shot was with an AR180 in .223 and called a 1inch exploding target with a peep sight,at 120yards, than I put the gun down,I wasn't going to top that. Its nice to see someone who likes to shoot without glass also. Good luck on your hunt.
